Ryan Friedman, owner of the Premier Collectible Conference & Exhibition has announced the PCCE event has been cancelled, citing economic conditions and lack of industry support. “After a successful 2008 PCCE event, I was excited to move forward and make the PCCE the marque event for collectors. Unfortunately, our industry, the economy, and other factors, wouldn’t lend itself to a successful and high-quality event that dealers, industry experts, auction companies, authentication companies, and collectors have come to expect from the Premier Collectible Conference & Exhibition,” said Friedman. Collectors who are interested in viewing all of the panel discussions and keynote speeches from the inaugural PCCE event can still do so by visiting Auction Report and clicking on the “Videos” link.

After a one-year hiatus, the Premier Collectible Conference and Exhibition will return to Chicago in 2010. Dealers and collectors looking for a different kind of sports collecting event will be glad to know that the Premier Collectible Conference and Exhibition will be back on the show calendar in 2010. After its debut in the spring of 2008, show organizer Ryan Friedman took stock of what went right and what needing improvement and recently announced plans to bring the convention back to the Stephens Convention Center next year. The show will take place Thursday, April 22 to Saturday, April 24, 2010.

To the casual observer, the gap between those smudgy-faced depression kids of yesteryear and today’s mega-collectors would seemingly have to be measured in light-years. But, according to Joe Orlando, the president of PSA and PSA/DNA who also serves as the editor-in-chief of “Sports Market Report,” the differences between those who prize a single card and those who own collections that are of museum quality in both size and content are minimal. That observation became clear to him as he worked on his latest book, Collecting Sports Legends – The Ultimate Hobby Guide (Zyrus Press, 2008).

In January of 1989, Billy Ripken, scheduled to be a five cent common in the 1989 Fleer set, ignited the hobby already entering its prime with the debut of the very first Upper Deck set. Packs of Fleer hit hobby stores right after New Year’s and, within two weeks, everyone had to have their hands on card No. 616, Billy Ripken. Additionally, it’s significant to note that virtually every one of the game used jerseys and helmets in our special Legends sale has been specifically photomatched to verify that the style of the item corresponds directly to its stated period of game action.
