Schulte Auctions featured many great vintage sports memorabilia in its recent August on-line auction but none more significant than five (5) images Babe Ruth signed and personalized to his sister Mamie (Mary Margaret Ruth-Mobley). One image included Babe in a workout tank top with a personalized note to his sister dated April 4, 1928. In addition, this lot included a separate photo of Mamie actually holding the signed Babe Ruth photo. This lot generated 39 bids and sold for $25,928, including the 15% buyer’s premium.

Paced by the sale of the only PSA 8.5 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, Memory Lane Inc’s 2010 Summer Treasures Auction came to a close in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 15. The Mantle card, consigned from a private collection, drew a final bid of $130,000. With the buyer’s premium added, the card realized $154,700. In all, the auction generated $2,045,624. The second lot in the auction was a 1952 Topps unopened pack, graded PSA 8. The rare surviving example from Topps’ first major baseball card set was the highest-graded example in the hobby and the $25,470 final price set a new record for any recorded sale of an unopened sports card pack. Photographer Nat Fein’s personal copy of his Pulitzer Prize-winning photo entitled “The Babe Bows Out” sold for $47,924. The poignant photo of a dying Ruth shows him leaning on Bob Feller’s bat as cheers rained down from a packed Yankee Stadium. Authenticated by PSA as a first generation photo, it set a new record for an unsigned sports photograph.

The unique surviving T-206 Honus Wagner tobacco proof strip was purchased Tuesday at the Major League Baseball All-Star Auction for $316,250 by SCP Auctions of Laguna Niguel, CA for an anonymous client. The T-206 piece includes four other players: Mordecai Brown (HOF), Frank Bowerman, Cy Young (HOF), and Johnny Kling, along with Wagner. Commenting on the acquisition, David Kohler, president and CEO of SCP Auctions, said: “We are thrilled that we have been able to help our client obtain this iconic object in the field of baseball card collecting. The continued interest in T-206 Wagner legacy continues to transcend popular culture.”

A 1933 Goudey set, rated 16th on the PSA Set Registry with an average condition near EX, was brought the biggest payday in Legendary Auctions’ latest event. The auction, which closed last week, included a large number of pre-World War II singles, lots and sets. The Goudey set of 290 cards drew 15 bids and included a wrapper from the iconic gum card maker. Interest in Mickey Mantle cards show no sign of abating. A PSA 7 (near mint) 1952 Topps Mantle sold for $35,550, the second highest price paid for any item in the auction. a 1952 Topps set, including a complete run of black back variations, sold for $23,700. Multiple hobby records set the tone for historic Heritage Auctions Sports event, April 23. A Bobby Orr rookie jersey that had been tucked away in a closet for more than four decades brought $191,200 in its hobby debut on April 23 as part of Heritage Auctions’ 2010 Signature® Sports Memorabilia Auction. The sum is believed to be a new mark for the highest price ever realized at auction for a piece of hockey memorabilia. The auction totaled just more than $4.2 million; all prices include 19.5% Buyer’s Premium. “The pre-auction press for this jersey was enormous,” said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports at Heritage Auctions. “The news was all over the United States and I can’t imagine there were many Canadians who didn’t hear about it on television, the radio or in the papers. As a result we saw a bump in prices across the board.”

Bobby Orr’s rookie jersey is going, going, gone – sold for US$191,200 to an unnamed buyer at an auction in Dallas on Friday. The sweater is one of only two known to exist from Orr’s 1966-67 season with the Boston Bruins. “If ever there was such a thing, then this jersey is indeed the Holy Grail of hockey collectibles,” said Chris Ivy of Heritage Sports Auctions. “It’s as much about the $191,200 final price as it is about Orr’s place as one of the most beloved NHL players in the history of the sport.” Read full story here at the Toronto Sun web site.
