Jackie Robinson Jersey Sold For Nearly Half A Million In Lelands.Com $2.7m Winter Auction

A rare and genuine piece of American history, the Jackie Robinson worn 1950 Brooklyn Dodgers jersey generated 21 bids and ultimately sold for $401,968 in Leland’s winter auction. The first ever African-American player in major league baseball, Jackie opened the door for all minority players and left a legacy that lives on.  Lelands.com’s winter auction contained over seven hundred lots of sports memorabilia, pop culture and Americana memorabilia and vintage photographs.

Another notable sports highlight are three Don Newcombe awards which realized over $300,000: 1956 Don Newcombe Cy Young Award ($103,136.58), 1956 Don Newcombe National League Most Valuable Player Award ($166,102.49), and 1949 Don Newcombe National League Rookie of the Year Award ($30,995.23).

The Bob Watt Olympic Hockey Collection featured a number of pieces from the family of Robert McDonald Watt, a member of the Edmonton Mercury’s amateur senior team during their win at the 1950 World Championships in London and the 1952 Canadian Olympic Hockey team that went undefeated in Oslo, bringing home the gold (a feat that wouldn’t occur again for fifty years.) Bob Watt’s 1952 Canadian Olympic Hockey Gold Medal ($37,438.57), 1952 Bob Watt Edmonton Mercurys (Team Canada) Olympics Game Worn Sweater ($26,529.86), 1950 Bob Watt Edmonton Mercurys World Championship Game Worn Sweater ($9,076.01).

Another popular hockey item was the 1968-69 Bobby Orr Boston Bruins Game-Worn Jersey. One of the finest Orr jerseys to be auctioned, this photo-matched jersey came from Orr’s third NHL season and is the one he wore on the cover of Sports Illustrated February 3, 1969 issue. (Price realized $137,274.79)
