SportsCardLink Auction Yields Record Prices for Consignors of Certified Vintage, Baseball Cards

SportsCardLink.Com is proud to announce the conclusion and results of its final auction of the 2011 “season.” The auction concluded on Thursday, December 8th, 2011, and included over 200 high quality lots of sports cards in all grades and price ranges. Several spectacular prices were attained, including a cumulative total of over $20,000 for a 15 card collection of scarce black ink “Lenox” brand cards from the highly collected set of T206 White Borders. Individual results from this special group include:an SGC 40 (3) batting pose of Hall of Famer Frank Chance which sold for $1,840, an SGC 50 (4) VG/EX example of the batting pose of Rube Oldring ($1,725) and an SGC 40 (3) copy of the Hooks Wiltse (Portrait w/Cap) card which sold for $1,495. Every one of the 13 Lenox backed T206’s graded at least SGC 30 (2) Good sold in excess of $1,000 per card, which is a remarkable benchmark.

SCL President Josh Nathanson stated that “One of the most amazing elements of this auction was the fact that these 15 different Lenox backed cards had a total of 8 separate and distinct buyers! It leaves no doubt in our minds that, combined with our hard work on establishing and maintaining strong relationships, the extensive web and print advertising that we have invested in has established the SportsCardLink brand even at the farthest reaches of the sports card collecting hobby. I am certain that we were able to peak the interest of all relevant buyers for these cards, and therefore max out value for the seller that entrusted us with his collection. This is what we are focused on across the board for everyone – helping our consignors reach the buyers that will be most aggressive for each card.”

Other impressive results from the auction included a 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle card, graded by SGC as 60 (EX) 5, for $12,650. This price eclipses the last two other publicly recorded sales of this card in the same grade (and the only ones over the past 2 calendar years). SportsCardLink realized a mind-blowing $1,737 for a 1933 Goudey #181 Babe Ruth card in CGC 30 (2), against an SMR value of $1,000 and VCP averages of $1105 (for PSA 2) and $1198 (for SGC 30 (2), after being brought up by the SportsCardLink sale), Shockingly, that price beat all 32 of the PSA 2 and SGC 30 (2) prices realized at auction for this Babe Ruth card since 2007! Examples of other strong sales, this time at the upper end of the grading spectrum, include PSA Mint 9 examples of the 1955 Topps #2 Ted Williams card ($9,060) and the 1957 Topps #1 Ted Williams card for $5,226.

SportsCardLink Consignment Director Chris Porter states “This auction was successful for our consignors from nearly any angle. Prices realized were very strong and they took home a net price that largely could not be attained anywhere else. On the flip side, I think buyers truly appreciated bidding at an auction house where customer service is a priority, and a big part of that is offering them the option of paying by credit card. Especially in this economy, that seems to me to be an important thing to encourage collectors to place that extra bid. It is something that buyers and sellers alike should not overlook when selecting an auction house.”

In 2012, SportsCardLink will continue it’s tradition of delivering outstanding results for its consignors while at the same time delivering back to them the highest share of the proceeds. If you are interested in discussing consignment possibilities for the SportsCardLink March, 2012 Auction, please call Chris Porter (ext. 104), Douglas Gillock (ext.102) or Josh Nathanson (ext. 101) at 617-517-0072 or email your prospective list of consignments to buysell@comiclink.com.
