The uniform Don Larsen was wearing when he pitched baseball’s only World Series perfect game sold at auction Wednesday night for $756,000. The jersey and pants drew 22 bids in a sale conducted by Steiner Sports.  Bidding began on the October 8 anniversary of the day Larsen shut down the Brooklyn Dodgers. For athletes who retired decades ago like Larsen, significant souvenirs can be worth many times their career earnings.  Larsen’s major league salary may have peaked at $20,000 in 1965. But the value of his uniform has risen sharply. Brandon Steiner, whose sports marketing company will conduct the 56-day auction beginning Oct. 8, the 56th anniversary of Larsen’s perfect game, said it could sell for “close to a million.” Given the potential seven-figure proceeds from the sale, other athletes whose salaries never approached that may wonder whether they have a windfall waiting behind panes of museum glass. Arguably the greatest achievement in all of sports is throwing a Perfect Game. Only twenty one have ever been masterfully carved in well over 100 years of baseball history. It is the pinnacle of pitching, the masterpiece of a career. Only one has ever been thrown in post-season or World Series play, and that game was thrown by the New York Yankees Don Larsen during Game five of the 1956 World Series. On October 8th, 1956 Larsen spun his gem, needing only 97 pitches to complete the feat, striking out seven and going to a three-ball count just once.
