Roger Cameron, 1944-2008
To all he will be missed, but not forgotten
Roger Cameron, a familiar face in the hobby auction business and an extraordinary marketing expert who had consulted for numerous Fortune 500 companies over the years, died Jan. 14 at his home in Appleton, Wis. He was 63.
A widely admired and affable presence at many of the major card shows around the country, Cameron was the owner of Cameron Target Marketing, providing consulting services for Memory Lane Auctions over the past four years.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, he earned an MBA from Michigan State, finishing No. 1 in his class and completing four years of coursework in only two years. That underpinning and his relentless enthusiasm and business acumen helped create a Renaissance man who ended up doing consulting work for a number of Fortune 500 companies. That roster included a stint as a marketing director of Intangibles and a three-year period working for JC Penney Signature Group, a subsidiary of Mobile Oil, where he wound up in the top-10 employee rankings three years in a row, a group that boasted more than 250,000 employees.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he founded Pop's Corn, a California-based gourmet food group that Memory Lane associate Gary Tauscher described as "the business he loved the most." According to Tauscher, Cameron put his heart and soul into the development of that project, but he also developed many business and marketing plans for friends and associates in impromptu discussions around his kitchen table. Still, it was family that remained the central focus of his life.
