  • Weak Dollar Draws Foreign Online Buyers (October 31, 2007)
The economy has slowed and the dollar is weakening — not usually a winning combination for small U.S. retailers. But many of those who sell their goods online are finding that buyers from other countries are gradually making up a larger portion of sales. Exchange rates may not be a deciding factor when one buys boots, bangles or home-run baseballs, but they are certainly working to foreigners' advantage these days. David Kohler, president and CEO of the California-based sports memorabilia auction site SCP Auctions, said he's not sure if it's the dollar's doing, "but there's definitely more of a foreign presence than a year ago and than the year prior."

  • War Hero, Horror Icon: Washington, Poe Letters Lead R&R Auction Results  (October 23, 2007)
Better security of the frontiers and protection of our magazines-that was the rationale for General George Washington's move to consolidate army regiments as outlined in a 1779 letter to New York Governor George Clinton. The letter, one of more than 1,500 lots in R&R Enterprises' October auction, passed into the hands of a collector for the princely sum of $32,071, the sale's top result. America's favorite pastime is still tops among collectors, as evidenced by keen competition for a 1951 game-used bat signed by Ted Williams, $21,190; a baseball signed by Ruth, Gehrig, and DiMaggio, $9,140; and a Christmas card from Jackie Robinson to Gil Hodges, $5,117. All prices above include the buyer's premium. R&R Enterprises' next auction begins on October 30 and ends on November 14.

  • Nostalgia Boosts Collectibles Market  (October 3, 2007)
Vintage sports memorabilia is fetching big money as baby boomers who once thought it impractical to spend their money on collectibles now can afford the keepsakes of their youth. An investment in a Honus Wagner baseball card for $2.8 million last month is the emblem for the trend toward large-money purchases of vintage items versus modern-day memorabilia. Modern-day slugger Barry Bonds, the newly anointed home run king of Major League Baseball, by comparison, saw the ball he hit for the record go for about $750,000."We are seeing more of an interest in vintage collectibles because the baby boomers are making more money than they were 20 years ago when they were just starting out," said Doug Allen, president of Mastro Auctions, a sports memorabilia auctioneer in Illinois.
