Robert Edward Auctions Update (4/27)

Just a quick reminder that the current auction closes this upcoming Saturday April 30, 2005. Please remember that IF YOU HAVE NOT BID ON AN ITEM BEFORE 4:00 PM EST, YOU CANNOT BID ON IT AFTER 4:00 PM. EST. This is two hours earlier than in the past, so we want to be sure that we have communicated this clearly. We don’t want anyone to be shut out of the bidding on any given lot of interest simply because they did not understand this rule, or were remembering the later time used in previous auctions. This is one of several changes we have made to allow the auction to close at an earlier hour. If you have any questions please let us know and good luck in the auction!

Sincerely,

American presidents once again dominate the “top ten,” with two George Washington signed items and five Abraham Lincoln signed pieces represented. Won at our April auction were an incredible one-of-a-kind patent for electrical distribution signed as “Thomas Alva Edison” at $30,305; an interesting pair of typed signed letters from Orville and Wilbur Wright’s which convey the yielding of financial rewards of their historic invention at $18,243; nine days before his death, Lincoln writes to Secretary of War Stanton regarding the imprisonment of Confederate General Rufus Barringer, who met with Lincoln at City Point on the very same day which was won for $12,419; Chief of Hitler’s Chancellery Philipp Bouhler’s guest book, signed by a who’s who of the Third Reich, including three Adolf Hitler signatures, as well as Goring, Goebbels, Hess, Ley, Todt, Jannings and Schmeling at $9,945; a document signed “G. Washington,” in which he approves payment to a blacksmith for $7,787; an address panel addressed in Washington’s hand to his stepson, John Parke Custis, a relative of Robert E. Lee and signed in the lower left “G. Washington” at $7,710; a document signed “Abraham Lincoln” in which the President appoints a Chaplain to the United States Hospital at Philadelphia at $7,594; a document signed “Abraham Lincoln” in which the President appoints a Surgeon at $7,020; a signed document in which Abraham Lincoln appoints Benjamin F. Trumbull, “to be receiver of Public Moneys for the district of lands subject to sale as Omaha, Nebraska territory” was won for $6,371; and, a handsome Abraham Lincoln military appointment at $6,230. (Sale price reflects the winning bid plus the buyer's premium).

A small sampling of the thousands of terrific pieces in our approaching May auction (online May 2, ending May 18 at 10:00 E.S.T.) includes:

Signed by Marilyn Monroe…an original program from President Kennedy’s 1962 birthday salute at Madison Square Garden! Monroe’s sexy, breathy delivery of “Happy Birthday, Mister President” has achieved legendary status and sadly, proved to be her last public appearance; an inspiring photo of Pope John Paul II; a postcard from the Help! ski lodge signed by each of the Fab Four; an extraordinary album page signed by Hitler and Third Reich icons Goebbels, Speer and others; wonderful handwritten letters from renowned composers Richard Wagner, Georges Bizet, Hector Berlioz, Giuseppe Verdi and Johannes Brahms; a document signed by one of the most difficult to find signers of the Declaration of Independence, Joseph Hewes; a Disneyland brochure signed on the park’s opening day by Walt Disney himself; a remarkable section of an unpublished Einstein article related to the Unified Field Theory and Hamilton’s Principle which contains two mathematical equations; an uncommon Josef Guillotin document; a Ship’s pass signed by President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of State James Madison (with an at-sea notation on the reverse regarding an encounter with the British Navy); a exceptionally scarce Walt Disney signed color photo; a Christmas card from Pope John Paul; an Abraham Lincoln war-dated endorsement concerning Brigadier General Charles Harker, who distinguished himself at Chickamauga and Chattanooga and was killed at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain; a James Longstreet ALS in which he resolutely praises Meade’s participation at Gettysburg; an original sketch of Gertie the Dinosaur by Windsor McCay; a rare Herman Melville ALS; a highly uncommon Standard Oil stock certificate for 100 shares, signed by Rockefeller and Flagler, issued to a key member of the Standard Oil management team; a mesmerizing Tolstoy signed cabinet portrait; an uncommon Jules Verne signed photo; and, a rare Wilbur Wright signed photo from his October 7, 1908 flight in France…

And with literally thousands more, there’s something for everyone! R&R conducts a monthly auction offering close to THREE THOUSAND items of historical and celebrity memorabilia, autographs, and ephemera. In business for over 20 years, R&R is based in New Hampshire and services a global bidding clientele of over 30,000 collectors. Pete Mahovlich Goal Scoring Puck to be Offered by Heritage in May! (4/7)

Historic 1972 Summit Series Pete Mahovlich Goal Scoring Puck to be Offered by Heritage!

DALLAS, TEXAS: Heritage Sports Collectibles (HSC) will offer the puck that won Game Two of the historic 1972 Summit Series in their upcoming Signature auction, to be held May 14 in their Dallas, Texas headquarters

Pete Mahovlich Goal Scoring Puck

"The 1972 Summit Series is considered perhaps Canada's greatest moment on the international hockey stage, and is still remembered in that country in much the same way that we think of the 1980 U.S. Olympics 'Miracle on Ice' here in the U.S." explained Chris Ivy, Director of HSC. "This puck, netted by Pete Mahovlich in Game Two of the Series, represents the finest artifact from that Series ever to be offered for public auction."

The puck comes to Heritage via a fan in attendance at the second game of this Series between Canada and the Soviet Union, who had a seat near the glass on the Soviet half of the ice when Mahovlich scored a goal to put the Canadians ahead three to one.

"With Team Canada a man down and in penalty-killing mode, Mahovlich delivered what is generally considered to be the finest individual performance of the Summit Series," noted Ivy. "Freezing a defender with a fake shot, Mahovlich created a one-on-one opportunity against the Hall of Fame Soviet goalie Vladislav Tretiak and slipped it into the net for a score. Most hockey historians consider this the turning point in both the game and the Series at large, which Canada went on to win in dramatic fashion."

After the goal was netted, it was immediately put back into play again, and was moved to the Soviet half of the ice, where a face-off was called. As the puck was dropped, it instantly became airborne again and tumbled into the seats, where the consignor caught it and quickly stuffed it into his pocket. The puck shows tremendous use from that historic game, with heavy gouges from collisions with sticks and skate blades. The flags of the two competing nations appear on one side, with the words "Canada 1972 Russia." The verso has the consignor's vintage notation, in gold, reading "Peter Mahovlich 6:47 Second Per. - Short Handed - Canada 3, USSR 1 - Final Score Can. 4, USSR 1."

"Serious hockey collectors already know that pucks from this storied series are all but non-existent," said Ivy, "and would clamor for any opportunity to own one, much less one with the history-making relevance of this puck. With half the games played in the Soviet Union, and those 'away games' using pucks printed in the Russian language, only a very small supply of pucks such as this one ever existed, and almost all have been lost to the ages in the three decades since. But a chance to own the specific puck that turned the tide for the Canadian team in the 1972 Summit Series is certainly, without question, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

A notarized letter of provenance from the consignor is included in the lot, which carries a pre-auction estimate of $15,000 - $25,000.

R&R's April Auction Is Now Online! (4/7)

Fabulous items this month! As always, we seek only the highest quality items for every catalog. This month, frankly, I believe we've outdone ourselves!

A sampling of the treasures you'll find this month include several Abraham Lincoln signed pieces, including an historically significant letter wherein Lincoln calls an 1862 cabinet meeting to silence Secretary of War Simon Cameron's annual report proposing that slaves freed by Union troops be immediately emancipated and used in the war effort.

Other fine examples this month include a John Wilkes Booth signed book entitled Rifles and Rifle Practice, an eerie foreshadowing of his assassination of Lincoln - an extremely rare letter searching for an Alamo revolutionary - a scarce signed photo of the Big Bopper - an original Mark Twain handwritten manuscript page from an unfinished story entitled "Huck Finn & Tom Sawyer Among The Indians" (with a letter of provenance from Twain's daughter!) - The Art of Animation, signed by Walt Disney and all of his Nine Old Men - a letter from Lewis Carroll coaxing a visit from a ten year old - an incredible one-of-a-kind patent for electrical distribution signed "Thomas Alva Edison" - an Ian Fleming letter good-humoredly disapproving of a James Bond likeness - a letter from Gandhi bluntly defending The New Testament - a superb Geronimo signature - a telegram from General Halleck regarding an accusation of General Grant's drunkenness - a dazzling Jean Harlow signed photo - original drawings by Michael Jackson, providing an unexpected look into his private life and insecurities - a four-language ship's pass signed by Jefferson and Madison - a JFK assassination archive hinting at another theory regarding his death - a cordial invitation to tea from notorious German spy Mata Hari - an Annie Oakley signed photo - an amazing oversized Charlie Brown sketch - a rare Tchaikovsky ALS - Chief of Hitler's Chancellery Philip Bouhler's guest book, signed by a who's-who of the Third Reich, including three Hitler signatures, as well as Goring, Goebbels, Hess, Ley, Todt, Jannings and Schmeling - a Honus Wagner check - a George Washington signed address panel to his stepson, John Parke Custis, a relative of Robert E. Lee - and a pair of Orville and Wilbur Wright letters demonstrating the financial rewards of their historic invention.

Michael Jordan Game Worn Uniform to be Offered by Heritage! - (3/17)

Dallas, Texas: Heritage Sports Collectibles (HSC) will offer a Chicago Bulls uniform, game worn by legendary basketball star Michael Jordanduring his breakthrough 1987-88 season, in their upcoming Signature auction to be held May 14 at their Dallas, Texas headquarters.

"I don't think anybody needs to make a case for Jordan's relevance to the game of basketball," joked Chris Ivy, Director of HSC. "Clearly the three or four people on earth who don't understand this already will not be among those in the hunt for this piece when the bidding starts. It does bear noting, however, that the jersey dates from a particularly significant era, a defining one, in Jordan's career. The 1987-88 season was really the one that caused the basketball world to realize that Jordan wasn't just a pretty good player. It became clear that he very well could be a legend in the making."

"The facts bear this out pretty convincingly," agreed Jonathan Scheier, HSC Consignment Director. "First team All-NBA for a second consecutive year, League Most Valuable Player, and Defensive Player of the Year. And he got the Bulls out of the Round One of the playoffs for the first time since his arrival in Chicago. He even won the Slam Dunk Competition that year, and it's worth mentioning that Mike was wearing his red jersey when he won that contest with his incredible leap from the foul line."

Scheier points to the condition of the uniform as lending credence to this theory, and Ivy quickly agreed. "Frankly, I've never seen such tremendous wear on a modern NBA gamer, much less a Jordan. I don't know if he saw this as a lucky uniform or if he just wasn't issued many that season, but there's no question that he wore it very, very often."

In addition, Ivy stated "This uniform was given to our consignor from a friend, Billy McKinney, then-Bulls VP of Basketball Operations. We've got the letter from McKinney that accompanied the jersey when it was mailed, stating that he'd finally rounded up a Jordan jersey for the gentleman, and with the shorts as well. The combination of such airtight provenance and tremendous, relevant use has to make this one of the most desirable Jordan uniforms to ever be offered at auction."

HSC specializes in rare and collectible sports cards, as well as uniforms, equipment, and related vintage sports memorabilia. Consignments for future Signature Sports Auction are currently being accepted. Prospective consignors or sellers of quality vintage sports cards and sports memorabilia are encouraged to contact:

Appropriately, presidents were well represented in the February auction with Jefferson, Madison, Lincoln and LBJ in our top ten! The list was nicely rounded out by a fascinating Robert E. Lee letter, a great Picasso sketch, a John Hancock signed document, a Star Wars document, a George Pickett signature, a wonderful L. Frank Baum TLS and a great Samuel L. Clemens letter.

$3,248 George Pickett
$3,112 L. Frank Baum
$2,925 Samuel L. Clemens

According to Bob Eaton, proprietor of R&R, ³A great deal of interest was generated in the Robert E. Lee letter in which General Lee wrote about the troop strength of Stonewall Jackson and Longstreet at 2nd Manassas.²

Be sure to look for next month¹s offerings, which include the personal guest book of Brian and Eleanor Aherne; a vintage Beatles signed photo; a copy of Won In The Ninth, signed by the author, Christy Mathewson; a rare Marie Antoinette endorsement; a superb document signed by future Prime Minister Winston Churchill and King George V; a George Custer ALS signed three times and written only weeks before Little Big Horn, and many, many more exciting items!

Heritage to Offer Dempsey Championship Belt in Upcoming Auction - February 17, 2005

Dallas, Texas: A championship belt awarded to boxing legend Jack Dempsey will be offered in Heritage Sports Collectibles' (HSC) upcoming Signature Auction, to be held Friday, April 22, 2005 in Dallas, Texas.

The belt, which was awarded to Dempsey on October 22, 1926 by the New York Boxing Writer's Association, is considered the most prestigious belt that could have been awarded to a boxer at the time, considering the importance of the NYBWA. The belt was captured in a photograph, which shows Dempsey accepting the prize from sportswriter Wilbur Wood and announcer Joe Humphries, who awarded a similar belt to Gene Tunney at the same time. The belt was actually awarded one month following Dempsey's historic defeat at Tunney's hands, but as the NY Boxing Writer's Association had never given Dempsey a belt, they decided to present the awards to both fighters at the same time. Dempsey would fight Tunney once again, unsuccessfully, in September of 1927 in the famous "Long Count" bout, the last important fight of his career.

In later years, Dempsey gave the belt to a friend who retained it until consigning it to the upcoming auction. It has not had any other owners since it was originally given to the consignor by Dempsey himself.

"To my knowledge, this is the only Dempsey belt that has ever been offered at public auction, " said Chris Ivy, Director of HSC, "making it a rare and unique collector's item. This is an important piece of modern American boxing history, with an impeccable provenance, the likes of which may never be offered publicly ever again."

Widely considered to be one of the toughest boxers of modern times, Jack Dempsey beat reigning champion Jess Willard in 1919, earning him both the heavyweight title and the nickname, "The Manassas Mauler." Dempsey reigned supreme in the ring until 1926, when he was defeated by Gene Tunney in an historic bout. He retired from boxing in 1928, shortly after the "Long Count" bout, although he did appear in the occasional exhibition match until about 1940. Dempsey went on to a career as a successful restaurant owner. He died in New York City in 1983.

Lelands Monthly Internet Auction has been Renamed "The Fredo Auction" - February 16, 2005

Our monthly Internet auction has been renamed "The Fredo Auction". Why?

It's like the character Fredo Corleone in The Godfather who was passed over as Don for his kid brother Mike. These little monthly auctions may not get the same respect as our big multi-million dollar auctions but like Fredo, The Fredo Auction demands and deserves respect. Fugedaboutit, it's still a Lelands auction and has some great stuff in it.

Does this make sense to you? It better.

Below are the opening and closing dates for the coming year:
February 16-27
March 16-27
April 13-24
June 15-26
July 13-24
August 14-25
September 14-25
October 12-24
November 16-27

Every month we will bring to you new and exciting vintage Sports and Americana pieces at incredibly low, REAL reserves. We're making you an offer you can't refuse.

IMPORTANT NEW WEBSITE CHANGES!

Things look different! What has changed?
- Don't let the new look fool you, things work nearly the same as before.
- Check out the new BidTracker layout!
- It is more intuitive and looks better on a wide variety of monitor sizes & resolutions.
- It is now even easier to follow your bids and interests.

How does it affect me?
- We expect fewer delays on the night of the auction close.
- All bids are now submitted from the same location (the item detail page).
- It will be easier to determine the status of items you are bidding on or watching, and easier to determine which items you are still eligible to bid on after the 10-minute rule goes into effect.

Why do you guys keep changing your site? - To better serve our customers! We have incorporated your suggestions!
- To correct flaws and/or bottlenecks as they become apparent.
- Because the improvements in technology enable us to provide you with better functionality and a better online experience.

Are there more changes coming?
- Yes! Until we have the perfect site, we will continue to look for ways to improve it.
- Although we are currently working on several minor enhancements, there are no additional major changes planned for the near future.

Need more info?
For more a detailed description of any item please call, fax or email before the last night of the auction. We are happy to help with specific questions but cannot guarantee that we will be able to get back to you in time if the request comes in late on auction night.

Don't forget that with the Ten Minute Rule you can bid at any time during the auction and you will not get outbid in the last few minutes. As long as you have bid on an item before 10 pm you will be able to bid after 10 pm - you cannot be sniped at the last minute because each bid starts the auction clock for another 10 minutes.
