1922 Ty Cobb Uniform Sells for $385,500 in Heritage Auction(0) A full Ty Cobb uniform believed to have been worn in 1922 sold for $385,500 at auction on Friday afternoon. Just four Cobb uniforms are known to exist. The uniform was part of a large live auction conducted by Heritage Auctions in Dallas. The final price includes a buyer’s premium. A born showman off the field and a marvelous performer on it, he had an amazing flair for doing the spectacular at the most dramatic moment.” And despite the “Sultan of Swat” being gone for 63 years, no sports figure is, or has been, more popular in the world of sports memorabilia. There are “stars,” “legends” and “notables,” but Ruth was more than that. He was, and still is, an icon. Lou Gehrig Collection Helps Bring Heritage Auction Total to Nearly $5 MillionComments Off A grouping of six items, known as The Lou Gehrig Collection, brought to auction by the son of a woman who was left the trove by Gehrig’s mother, Christina, brought almost $1 million alone as the emotional centerpiece of Heritage Auctions’ Aug. 4 Signature Vintage Sports Collectibles Platinum Auction. The lead lot of the group was Gehrig’s previously unknown 1934 Tour of Japan game-worn uniform, which realized $507,875. (All prices include 19.5 percent buyer’s premium.) Overall, the auction yielded more than $4.95 million on just 97 lots sold. This translates into an average lot value of more than $51,000, with a general sell-through of 93 percent, as 579 bidders competed for a piece of the unparalleled sporting history that was on the block. |
