1920 Babe Ruth Photo Sets World Record at SCP’s Multimillion-Dollar February Finest Auction

SCP Auctions’ special February Finest Auction closed with a bevy of bidding on Saturday night, with numerous sports cards and memorabilia items seeing spectacular sales.  Leading the way was USA Hockey player Steve Christoff’s gold medal from the 1980 “Miracle On Ice” team, which went for $375,961. The forward helped lead the Americans to one of the greatest upsets in sports history over USSR at the 1980 Winter Olympics.

Some vintage cards also performed admirably in the multimillion-dollar auction. A 1909-11 T206 complete set fully PSA graded with a 4.27 Set Rating brought $275,706, one of a few known autographed 1934 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig examples sold for $137,865, and a popular 1952 Topps #312 Jackie Robinson miscut card with part of the #311 Mickey Mantle clearly visible took in $48,316.

Several rare and historic PSA/DNA Type 1 original photographs saw showstopping sales, particularly a pair of 1920 Babe Ruth Paul Thompson photos. A Thompson image of Ruth swinging for the fences sold for $153,389, which is a new world record price for any Ruth Yankees photo. Another shot showing the Babe picking out his home run bat brought $52,417. An oversized Babe Ruth autographed photograph signed months after the historic 1927 season took in $34,190.

Game used memorabilia garnered strong numbers as well. An Aaron Judge jersey from three of the home runs he hit during his 2022 record-breaking 62 home run season sold for $82,864, a Ted Williams glove photomatched to multiple images from 1955-56 brought $60,667, and a 1965 Pelé Brazil jersey with a MEARS A10 designation took in $45,578.
Other unique items brought plenty of bidding activity. Ted Williams’ 1947 Triple Crown trophy sold for $124,289, Muhammad Ali’s 1965-66 United States passport took in $91,151, and a 1962 Cassius Clay poem predicting his victory over Sonny Liston brought $35,801.

Valuable championship jewelry dazzled bidders in the sale. Bill Russell’s NBA 50 Greatest Players ring brought $82,864, Samaki Walker’s 2002 Los Angeles Lakers championship ring went for $34,190, Rubén Sierra’s 1996 New York Yankees World Series ring took in $25,686, and a 2006 Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl XLI player’s ring sold for $25,686.
