Highlights Include:
1909-11 T206 Eddie Plank SWEET CAPORAL 350 SGC 1 PR
Eddie Plank’s T206 issue is widely considered the second rarest card from the iconic set behind only the T206 Honus Wagner. Speculation over the reason why includes theories about his disdain for cigarettes, a broken printing plate, and simple error, but there is no definitive evidence to support the claims. A T206 Eddie Plank showing up for auction is also rare. Public data sets show the card has only appeared a handful of times over the past few years:
- Three T206 Plank cards have sold at public auction so far in 2023. This will be the fourth.
- Three T206 Plank cards sold at public auction in 2022.
- Five T206 Plank cards sold at public auction in 2021.
This example is one of only 39 graded by SGC. PSA has graded just 21 examples of this Plank issue.
1997 Metal Universe Championship Precious Metal Gems Michael Jordan /50 BGS 9
Michael Jordan’s 1997 Skybox Metal Universe Championship PMG released on the heels of a season that saw him win his fifth title and Finals MVP and add to his legacy by way of the iconic Game 5 Finals “Flu Game”. These Championship PMG inserts deviated from Metal Universe’s previous backgrounds by featuring the players in front of their team’s cityscapes. As one of just 50 examples in existence, this Championship PMG ranks as one of the more sought-after Jordan inserts. BGS graded this example a Pop 7 Mint 9 with only one graded higher.
1982 NCAA Finals Ticket Stub Michael Jordan AUTO DNA 10 PSA AUTH
The North Carolina Tar Heels faced the Georgetown Hoyas in the 1982 NCAA basketball final in what is widely considered one of the greatest college games of all time.
The Hoyas, led by Eric “Sleepy” Floyd and Patrick Ewing, kept the game incredibly close until the end when a freshman by the name of Michael Jordan hit the go-ahead basket with 17 seconds left to take the Tar Heels to the title. A total of 17.52 million TVs tuned in to watch the game, making it the second-largest NCAA game in history behind the Magic Johnson-Larry Bird final in ‘79. No one knew who Jordan would become, and most of the nearly 62,000 fans in attendance merely tossed away their tickets. In fact, PSA has only graded 11 examples of this rare Blue Variation stub. Of the 11, this PSA authenticated example is the only one to be signed by Jordan.
A PSA 2 example of Sherry Magee’s “Magie” error card is on the auction block. After the American Tobacco Company noticed they misspelled Magee’s name on his cigarette card, they fixed the mistake and printed a correct “Magee” version. As a result, they allegedly printed few “Magie” cards. This PSA 2 earned a PWCC-A Eye Appeal designation, indicating PWCC’s experts feel it falls in the top 30% of all PSA 2 copies.
2015 Fleer Showcase Metal Universe Blue Connor McDavid ROOKIE /50 #MU-1 PSA 10
Upper Deck gave just 30 cards from their 2015 Fleer Showcase Metal Universe NHL set the iconic PMG treatment. And as the biggest force in hockey, Connor McDavid was the first name on the checklist. The PMGs serial numbered 11-50 were the only issues printed with blue foil, making this /50 card one of McDavid’s hardest to find rookie productions. With full bleed edges and a bright blue surface, this issue often suffers from condition sensitivity similar to the original 1990s PMGs. This example is the only one to earn PSA’s top Gem Mint 10 grade.
1998 Ultra Masterpieces Tim Duncan 1/1 #55P PSA 7 NRMT
Not many collectors own a 1/1 card from 1998 since parallels limited to a single production were still nascent. Fleer’s 1998 Ultra Masterpieces 1/1s helped define a new standard for rarity. The cards were inserted into packs of 1998-99 Fleer Ultra. Duncan was a rookie in the 1997-98 season, so this card features him in only his second year in the league as he prepared to win his first of five NBA titles. Tim Duncan’s Masterpieces parallel features the second-year Spur shooting a skyhook over Shaq — the two ranking as the NBA’s best big men at the time. PSA graded this 1/1 issue a Near Mint 7.
