Aaron, Young, Black Sox Headline Huggins and Scott Auction

(From Sports Collectors Digest) – The success of a sports memorabilia auction depends on quality items across a variety of categories and the bidders to buy those items. Enter Huggins and Scott.  The Maryland-based company has a strong lineup of quality items slated for its next sale, running from Jan. 23-Feb. 2. The list includes tobacco cards, big-name game-used bats and some pricey signatures.

Among the game-used highlights is a 1973-75 Hank Aaron game-used bat with a full LOA from PSA/DNA.

Tobacco tins have gotten a rise in attention thanks to a pair of Ty Cobb examples that have been unearthed in the past few months. This auction will include a Hall of Fame tobacco tin of a different flavor. From the early 1900s comes a Cy Young cigar tin promoting Mild Havana Blend. The tin measures 51/4 inches in diameter and is 51/4 inches high.

Original photos are a hot commodity right now, and Huggins and Scott has a beauty in a 1919 Chicago White Sox Type 1 photo certified by PSA/DNA. This original news service team photograph depicts 23 members of that controversial “Black Sox” roster and measures 101/2-by-8 inches.

Speaking of photos, the auction features a 1926 New York Yankees team-signed photo (JSA) that features Babe Ruth, Lou Gerig, Herb Pennock, Miller Huggins and Urban Shocker.

One of the scarcest World Series press pins in existence – the 1915 Philadelphia Phillies World Series press pin produced by J.E. Caldwell & Co. of Philadelphia – will be in the auction. The pin is in beautiful condition considering its age.

Boxing fans will enjoy a 1952 Rocky Marciano/Joe Walcott Heavyweight Championship full ticket – the only one graded by PSA/DNA.

Big-time signatures include a Walter Johnson single-signed ball, Johnson-signed program and a 1959 program signed by President John F. Kennedy.

Pete Maravich autographed “Heir To A Dream” autobiography with full PSA/DNA blessing is also in the mix.

Another unique piece is a 1876 Boston Red Caps National League Inaugural Year Season Pass that has been slabbed PSA “Authentic.” Other ticket-related pieces feature the Babe Ruth “Called Shot” 1932 World Series Game 3 ticket stub (PSA Authentic) and a 1978 full ticket from Wayne Gretzky’s first professional goal game – the lone example on the PSA Registry.

There are plenty of card highlights in the auction, from complete sets to high-grade singles. Among the latter is a 1971 Topps No. 513 Nolan Ryan, graded SGC 96. No other 1971 Topps Ryan card has graded higher.

Complete sets include 1952 Topps Baseball low number complete Nos. 1-310 set with six PSA-graded stars and 1958 Topps Football complete PSA-graded set (132/132) with Felt Initial Card.

The big draw is a pair of 1909-1911 baseball tobacco and caramel card collages with (210) cards, including Cobb and Wagner.

Regional food card collectors will enjoy a 1962 Kahn’s Wieners Atlanta Crackers PSA-graded set (24/24) that is No. 3 on the PSA Set Registry.

A couple other high-end singles: 1953 Bowman Color No. 97 Eddie Mathews GAI 8.5 and 1955 Topps No. 47 Hank Aaron GAI 9.
