Kevin’s Weekly Collecting Tips & FAQ
Question: There seems to be an endless supply of Babe Ruth autographs. How many actually exist?
Â
The obvious answer is that it is not possible to know either the number of times Babe Ruth signed his name or the number of signatures that still exist. Any figure one would throw out is simply an estimate. Having said that and considering both the writing of his name for mundane purposes such as signing checks or registering at a hotel and signing an autograph as one in the same, I am quite certain that I have seen many thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands of Ruth-signed items over the years These items include: photos-all sizes from small ones cut from newspapers to 16×20’s and one or two even larger than that, letters, documents (including his last will and testament signed just days before he passed), baseballs-single-signed, multi-signed, and team balls, album pages, 3×5’s, GPC’s, napkins–both cloth and paper, bats, hats, ping-pong and other paddles, checks, receipts, scorecards, baseball mitts, business cards, train schedules, hotel stationery, hotel registries, matchbooks, postage stamps, and postal covers. You name it, if it existed during his lifetime and it could be written on, Ruth was asked to sign it and apparently he complied with those requests most, if not all, of the time.Â
