Goldin, the leading collectibles marketplace, announces a vast and varied collection of Type 1 original sport and pop culture photos, ranging from Jackie Robinson in his Brooklyn Dodgers #42 jersey for the very first time to a completely signed 1969 Apollo 11 lunar landing image. The Type I “red number” color photo was officially produced by NASA and is autographed by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin.
Type 1 photographs are capturing the attention of collectors across the hobby. Type 1 photographs – first-generation prints made from the original negatives – have soared in popularity with auction houses consistently seeing six-figure sales. Goldin is at the forefront of this trend, responsible for the most expensive Michael Jordan Type 1 photo ever sold, at $225,000. A Joe Namath Type 1 image sold for $197,640 at Goldin in November, breaking the record for the highest price for a football Type 1 photo. Now, the availability of pop culture Type 1s offers an additional new frontier for collectors of all interests.
Available through the March Sports Elite and Pop Culture Auctions, the remarkable collection of Type 1 photographs features:
- Two Type 1 photographs of Jeff Bezos highlighting his excellence during his high school years, including an image of the Amazon founder winning the blue ribbon at his high school science fair and the class valedictorian’s senior yearbook photo.
- 1993 Type 1 photo of Nirvana lead Kurt Cobain and his daughter Frances Bean, only five months before the legendary rocker’s passing. The picture was captured by notable grunge and punk photographer Alice Wheeler.
- Candid shot of Marilyn Monroe in 1962 taken by American photojournalist Allan Grant. The image was published in LIFE Magazine alongside the icon’s final interview, published only two days before her death.
- 1985 Mike Tyson pro debut photo where his mentor Cus D’Amato can be seen lacing Tyson’s gloves, as well as an action shot from the same fight that depicts an extremely rare image of Tyson before his first win. A previous pro debut action photo recently sold for a record-breaking $20,745 in September.
- Signed Type 1 photo of Serena and Venus Williams in 1996 that is the earliest known example of a Serena and Venus-signed Type 1, if not the earliest known signatures from the legendary tennis sisters.
- Michael Jordan in 1990 wearing the #12 jersey for the first and only time, after an Orlando Magic security staff member swiped the famous #23 jersey from the locker room. Jordan played the game as the only Bull on the floor without his name on his back.
The photos are currently up for sale as part of Goldin’s March Elite and Pop Culture Auctions and will be available for bidding through March 30 and April 13, 2024 respectively.
