Vast Collection of Rare Type 1 Photos Up for Sale

Goldin, the leading collectibles marketplace, announces a vast collection of Type 1 original sports photos as part of Goldin’s May Elite Auction. Photographs in the collection depict iconic athletes such as Kobe Bryant, Mickey Mantle, Wilt Chamberlain and more in some of the earliest moments of their careers.

Type 1 photographs are capturing the attention of collectors across the hobby. These first-generation prints made from the original negatives have soared in popularity in recent years, becoming increasingly valuable among collectors. Goldin is at the forefront of this trend, responsible for the most expensive Michael Jordan Type 1 photo ever sold at $225,000.

Available through the May Elite Auction, the remarkable collection of Type 1 photographs features:

  • A super-rare Type 1 photo of Kobe Bryant from his rookie era in 1997. The oversized photograph was taken by Walter Iooss Jr., who is known for photographing Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Muhammad Ali and other iconic sports figures.
  • The first Ozzie Sweet PSA-certified Type 1 photograph of Mickey Mantle to ever come up for auction. Taken in 1952, this is one of the finest Mantle images of all, depicting the 20-year-old in pinstripes just after the release of his immortal ’52 Topps Card.
  • Brandi Chastain after scoring the World Cup-winning goal in 1999, marking one of the greatest moments in sports history.
  • 1953-55 Wilt Chamberlain photo taken in his teenage years making a basket at Overbrook High School. Rare early images are extremely valuable, with a type 1 photo of Chamberlain and his fourth-grade class having sold for nearly $20,000 last year.
  • Tiger Woods photographed in 1997 during his first-ever Masters win. The photo depicts Woods at 21 as he was awarded the coveted Green Jacket.
  • Early childhood Type 1 photo of Barry Bonds in 1971 at age 6, capturing Bonds and his family as he held a baseball bat with his brother.
  • The only signed Type 1 example of Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier holding the 1988 Stanley Cup and celebrating their final Oilers championship before Gretzky’s move to L.A.

Highest CGC-graded magazine EVER currently up for auction in inaugural collection

Goldin, the leading collectibles marketplace, introduces its first major foray into the growing sector of CGC-Graded Magazines. Highlighting the collection in Goldin’s May Elite Auction is the first Sports Illustrated magazine ever graded 9.9 by CGC—a December 2022 issue featuring Kylian Mbappé. After 15 years and more than 28,000 Sports Illustrated submissions, CGC’s 9.9 is the highest S.I. grade on record.

“We’re thrilled to have been chosen to handle such an important milestone magazine,” said Khyber Oser, Director of Vintage Memorabilia and Photography at Goldin. “We’ve strived to surround it with a varied selection of impressive magazines ranging from the 1940s through today. Because well-known photographers have shot so many magazine covers, there’s an exciting throughline between Graded Magazine collectors and Type I Photo collectors.”

The current record price for any Graded Magazine is Michael Jordan’s Sports Illustrated 1st Pro Cover, which sold in 2023 for $126,000. It was a CGC 9.8 newsstand copy that ranked above any other example in the CGC Census at the time. This meant that its population report was “Pop 1, None Higher.” The ranking is subject to change as new examples are discovered. Being a newsstand edition  (without any subscription mailing label), the record-breaking magazine was even more rare.

High-grade newsstand magazines in Goldin’s offering include:

  • 6/4/56 Sports Illustrated Floyd Patterson 1st Cover (CGC 9.0 – Pop 1, None Higher)
  • 6/21/65 Sports Illustrated Mickey Mantle Cover (CGC 8.5 – Pop 3, with 3 Higher)
  • 1/1989 S.I. for Kids Michael Jordan 1st Cover (CGC 9.6 –  Pop 3, with 1 Higher)
  • 4/3/00 Sports Illustrated Tiger Woods Cover (CGC 9.8 – Pop 9, None Higher)

Key autographed newsstand magazines include:

  • 7/10/67 Sports Illustrated Signed Muhammad Ali Cover (CGC 7.5 – Pop 1, with 2 Higher)
  • 8/14/95 Sports Illustrated Signed Greg Maddux 1st Cover (CGC 8.0 – Signature Series Pop 1, None Higher)
  • 4/14/86 Sports Illustrated Signed, Inscribed Wade Boggs 1st Cover (CGC 7.5 – Signature Series Pop 1, None Higher)
