Bill Goodwin almost routinely comes up with remarkable high-grade cards and sets for his periodic auctions, and the latest in that series, Masterpieces and Uncommon Commons XX, is hardly an exception to that rule. Mix in several killer sets from the PSA Set Registry and you have a glimpse of the kind of firepower slated for the sale, which closes on Feb. 12. To learn more about the upcoming auction, go to www.goodwinandco.com or call (314) 849-9798.
`The auction contains four of the top five cards in the hobby, along with some of the highest graded complete sets,` said the veteran Goodwin.
That sterling description includes a T206 White Border Eddie Plank, a 1933 Goudey Nap Lajoie, a M101 Babe Ruth Rookie and a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, which is pretty fast company for a single auction.
The No. 2 T201 Mecca Double Folder and T202 Hassan Triple Folder sets are offered, along with the No. 1 rated N-162 Goodwin Champions set (sold as individual lots), the No. 1 ranked 1969 Kahn’s Wiener complete set and an N-28 Allen & Ginter set that was ranked No. 2 and will be sold as individual lots, plus the No. 3 National Game complete set and a 1955 Topps All-American Football complete set graded PSA 8.
There are also a number of tough 1948 Leaf cards (Ralph Kiner, Jackie Robinson and Bulldog Turner, all PSA 9s, and low-population commons), in addition to Mint 1949 Bowmans, three T206 White Border Hall-of-Fame Portrait cards graded PSA 9 and some ultra rare prewar issues, including a Boston Garter Sepia Lajoie and a Bluebird Ruth.
In addition, the lineup also includes: E94 Close Candy cards of Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner and Tris Speaker, a W600 Honus Wagner in PSA 4, T206 Hall of Famers and commons graded PSA 9 and 10, Cabinet cards of Ed Delahanty, Charles Comiskey, Dan Brouthers and Silver Flint, 1952 Topps low and high numbers graded PSA 8 and 9, 1921 and 1925 Exhibits of Ruth, Gehrig, Hornsby and Cobb, including several that are the highest-graded examples in the hobby.
The rookie lineup is no less imposing: M101 Sporting News Ruth PSA 5, 1925 Exhibits Lou Gehrig PSA 5.5, 1938 Goudey No. 250 Joe DiMaggio SGC 8.5, 1939 Play Ball Ted Williams PSA 8, 1949 Bowman Bob Lemon PSA 9, 1910 Old Mill Casey Stengel and a 1949 Bowman Jackie Robinson SGC 9.
