Grey Flannel Auctions current auction runs June 26 – July 17, 2019 . Bid, view and register for the auction at www.greyflannelauctions.com/catalog.aspx. Over 1,000 items of sports memorabilia, sports cards, autographs, Americana memorabilia, game used items and much more all up for auction. All major sports are represented in this exciting sale, with an emphasis on provenance, authenticity and rarity throughout.
Opening the auction is one of only two known 1891 John H. Ryder Cy Young cabinet cards. It was discovered recently in an album that had been found in a factory almost 65 years ago. The consignor was unaware of either the album’s contents or the great rarity of the Cy Young cabinet card. The rookie-era cabinet photo of Young is possibly the first image ever produced of the pitching legend in a major league uniform.
“This specific image of Young has been seen on a rare 1891 Cleveland Spiders team composite baseball schedule display, dating its origin to his first full season in professional baseball and warranting serious consideration as his true rookie issue,” said Michael Russek, director of operations for Grey Flannel Auctions. The card has been encapsulated and is graded PR 1 by PSA/DNA. An incredibly rare relic of one of baseball’s all-time greats, its high bid now stands at $49,279, with nine more days of bidding to come.
Lot 5 is a 1916 Red Sox Championship pocket watch gifted from Babe Ruth to his attorney. This watch comes with outstanding provenance and is accompanied by a notarized letter of authenticity from the consignor’s family stating, “This watch was gifted to my great uncle by Babe Ruth in exchange for some legal fees that he was due. The pocket watch was handed down through our family and has been in our possession for the better part of 100 years.” Fresh to the hobby, its current bid is $11,794.
Grey Flannel Auctions is honored to offer the Willie McCovey collection. Highlights from the beloved first baseman’s career include McCovey’s photo-matched 500th Home Run Trophy that was presented to him on the field after hitting his 500th home run in 1978. Also featured are McCovey’s 1969 All-Star Game MVP Award, mounted bat displays from his 500th home run and 2,000th hit, and multiple jerseys, including a 1967 road flannel.
Lot 562 is Paul Hornung’s 1956 Notre Dame Fighting Irish jersey from his Heisman Trophy season. Hornung is one of only three players to have won the Heisman Trophy, been selected as first overall National Football League draft pick, and been inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame. Originally sourced from a Notre Dame teammate, the Hornung jersey is accompanied by a Photo-Match.com LOA that grades the jersey a perfect 10. Current bid: $12,974
Lot 494 features Hall of Famer Garo Yepremian’s jersey from one of the most infamous plays in NFL history. Although Yepremian is in the Hall of Fame, he will mostly certainly be remembered for his unfortunate gaffe that occurred during Super Bowl VII, which pitted the Miami Dolphins against the Washington Redskins. When Yepremian’s 42-yard field goal attempt was blocked, he scampered to grab the football. His attempt to throw the football failed, and it was caught by Redskins defender Mike Bass, who returned for a touchdown. A rare piece from one of the most memorable plays in league history, its current bid is $3,025.
