1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #53 PSA NM-MT 8. The Babe entered the 1933 season fresh on the heels of his final World Championship season, one best remembered for his apocryphal “Called Shot” posted in a four-game Series sweep of the Chicago Cubs. So while his prodigious slugging skills may have been on the decline as this first great bubble gum issue tempted sweet-toothed youngsters at the local five-and-dime, the Bambino still held the firmest grasp upon the hearts and minds of the baseball public. That truth unquestionably holds true to this day, ensuring that Ruth is identified as the key card in any set that contains him.
Only the background color and card number differentiate this entry from card number 149–even the biographical text on card verso is the same. But this is the rarer of the two formats, with just fifteen specimens garnering a NM-MT 8 rating from the experts at PSA, a rating exceeded by a sole Mint 9 representation. Bright colors, clean surfaces and strong centering are the keys to success here, as they are with essentially every component of this extraordinary registry set.
Guide Value or Estimate: $100,000 – up. Bid on the item here.
