Heritage Auctions: Part 1 of The Andy Leff Hockey Collection to be Offered in November

Last Chance to Consign to the Heritage Fall Catalog Auction Featuring The Brooks Robinson CollectionHeritage Auctions is proud to present the first installment of the Andy Leff Hockey Collection in our Fall Catalog Auction. With an extraordinary compilation of game-used sticks, jerseys, milestone pucks, personal awards and more, the collection will be offered on HA.com/sports in multiple auctions over the next couple years. Leff reflected on the first Philadelphia Flyers game he attended when he went in the third grade with his friend Jon.

Like all great collections, they start in one magical moment – usually during one’s childhood. For Philadelphia native Andy Leff, the first glimpse of his collecting bug branched from his love of the game of hockey, and years later he was able to amass one of the greatest collections in the world of historic pieces from hockey legends.

“While everyone in my entire family collects something, I chose to make hockey my thing,” said Leff. “Hockey was the only sport I watched and followed growing up.”

“He had an extra ticket from his boy scouts troop, and I ended up taking it,” said Leff. “We had nose bleed seats at the very last row of the arena. There was a bench clearing brawl, lots of checking, ice cream, pretzels, screaming fans and some scoring. I was hooked. So when I got older and had some money saved away, I started to see that you could actually buy this stuff that the players used and I got hooked there too.”

Early on, Leff primarily focused on game-used sticks, and considered them the most interesting pieces of memorabilia because they were the tools that players used to do almost everything. He started collecting players that he liked and knew, such as Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, some of the Flyers players and more.

“As the collection of sticks started to slowly grow I started branching out,” said Leff. “My father was a big memorabilia collector, mainly baseball, and he put together a collection of baseball bats that spanned all decades and focused on Hall of Fame players. This got me intrigued and I started talking to other collectors and branching out a bit as I found that not many people at the time were putting together a stick collection like this.”

Leff decided to expand the reach of his collection as different types of items began to catch his eye.

“I started picking up some trophies, awards, rings, then jerseys, then special milestone pucks, equipment and pictures,” said Leff. “It’s nice to have a niche in collecting, as many people do, but I wanted to put together an all-around collection that showcased the entire history of the sport, not just a subset of it. To me, putting together something that encompassed everything about the sport was really unique and allows you to display your items in many different ways to show off the rich history of the game.”

As Leff’s collection grew he became friends with a number of other collectors and experts in the industry, and really started gaining a greater appreciation of everything about the game and its past. As for the reason he decided to sell his museum-quality collection in Heritage Auctions’ upcoming events, he said it was time to share it with the vast amount of other collectors who will get a thrill out of owning some of the greatest pieces of the sport.

“I chose to sell the collection now because like other collectors my collecting interests have changed and grown over the years,” said Leff. “With a collection like this it needs to be enjoyed by others who can give it the justice it deserves.”
