Heritage Auctions Space Exploration Auction Nearing Completion

Private Collection Launches Heritage Auctions Rare Books Sale to $2.1+ MillionThe consignment deadline has passed and Heritage Auctions is putting together quite an interesting May 11th Space Exploration Auction for your bidding pleasure. As of this writing, there are 500+ lots described and are working to process the rest of what has arrived.  Here is a preview a few of the key lots with images available.

Apollo 13 Flown Gold Robbins Medallion: This is the first time we have had the honor of offering a Gold Robbins Medal at auction. This one is from the estate of mission Command Module Pilot Jack Swigert and is one of only six produced for this near-disastrous mission. The Apollo chariot horses flying to the moon is one of the most artistic of all the Apollo medals and, believe me, it looks even more beautiful in gold than it does in silver.

Walt Cunningham’s I.S.S. Expeditions 1-45 Robbins Collection: By the year 2000, when missions to the International Space Station began, Robbins Medal designs were no longer simple round versions of the flight insignia but gorgeous large, highly-detailed works of art in many odd shapes. This collection of medals from the first forty-five Expedition missions was assembled by Apollo 7 astronaut Walt Cunningham who just happens to be the person who started the Robbins Medal tradition. This is a beautiful set that would make a fabulous display. Be sure to view the small group images at full resolution to fully appreciate the detailed craftsmanship of these low-mintage Sterling silver medallions.

Apollo 11 Rare Large Size American Flag on a Crew-Signed Presentation Certificate: We occasionally see these certificates bearing the “standard” 6″ x 4″ flags. We have never seen one with a 12″ x 8″ flag attached. It had to be folded into quarters to fit in the area allowed but portions of both the stars and the stripes are visible. Large flags from this mission are super rare and this one is authentically signed on the certificate by all three crew members. It was originally presented to a close and longtime associate of Neil Armstrong’s. This is another lot you do not want to pass up. It should create a lot of interest.

Apollo 8 “Earthrise” Original “Red Number” Color Photo. Once again, we have located a beautiful copy of this iconic photo of the earth rising over the lunar horizon. It has been reproduced millions of times in books, magazines, newspapers, and postage stamps. Here is one of the original red number chromogenic prints on fiber-based paper with the “A Kodak Paper” watermark.

X-15 Photo Signed by Neil Armstrong and Six Additional Pilots. What a magnificent plane! Armstrong, Scott Crossfield, Bill Dana, Joe Engle, William J. Knight, Milt Thompson, and Bob White have signed this large photo. It is archivally matted and framed and ready for the wall of your home or office.

New items are being added almost daily. Expect live bidding to begin approximately April 20th.
