Heritage Auctions Spring Sports Catalog Auction Features Unique Game-Worn Jerseys, Awards

Mickey Mantle Historic Home Run Jersey Among Coveted Gems at Heritage Auctions Platinum Night Sports AuctionSports collectibles is a billion-dollar industry and one of the fastest-growing categories at Heritage Auctions as realized by consecutive world-record setting Platinum Sports Auctions. The upcoming Sports Collectibles Auction May 11-13 in Dallas will feature significant game-worn uniforms and jerseys, as well as historic hardware won by some of the biggest names in their respective sports.

Expectations for any New York Yankee are always sky-high, but for Thurman Munson, the 1976 season was unquestionably his greatest season in a tragically short career. Named the team captain, the first man to hold that title since Lou Gehrig, Munson proved the wisdom of the honor bestowed upon him, batting .302 with 17 home runs and 105 runs batted in to earn the American League MVP Award while leading the Yankees to their first World Series appearance since 1964. This 1976 Thurman Munson World Series Game Four-Worn New York Yankees Jersey (est. $60,000+), is photo-matched and exhibits marvelous game wear from that special season.

1976 Thurman Munson New York Yankees Game Used Home JerseyShockingly, the aforementioned jersey and this pair of World Series pants, 1977 Thurman Munson World Series Game Six-Worn New York Yankees Pants (est. $10,000+), were purchased decades ago at a tri-state-area garage sale and subsequently worn by the consignor as a Halloween costume. They make their hobby debut in this Signature auction. The pants exhibit tremendous game wear from one of the most famous series in the history of the Yankees franchise as they ended a 15-year long World Championship drought with a Game Six win.

The season before Hank Aaron homered his way into the record books, passing Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list, “Hammerin’ Hank” wore this 1973 Hank Aaron Game Worn Atlanta Braves Jersey (est. $60,000+). The 1973 season was Aaron’s eighth and final in which he recorded 40 or more long balls, and thus it’s a veritable certainty that several free rides around the diamond were enjoyed in this garment. A photo of Aaron wearing the jersey and a letter of provenance from a major hobby figure states that the jersey derives from the personal collection of the executive director of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame well known to have close associations with the Braves are included with the jersey.

Worn during the Cleveland Browns NFL Championship campaign this

1964 Jim Brown Game-Worn Cleveland Browns Jersey (est. $40,000+), is the football equivalent of a 1927 Babe Ruth jersey – the sport’s greatest star, the team’s greatest season. Ironically, like the Munson uniform also offered in this auction, this jersey led a unique second life. Weeks after the 1964 NFL Championship game, Cleveland Browns equipment manager Morrie Kono contacted by a young fan asking if he could order Browns jerseys for the purpose of wearing them in touch football games. Kono informed him that new uniforms wouldn’t be ordered for months, but that he could supply them from the completed season. The consignor requested those of future Hall of Famers Jim Brown and kicker Lou Groza, whose jersey is presented within this Signature auction.

Walter Hagen was unquestionably golf’s foremost celebrity playboy of his era, and the 1926 match play battle took place when he was firmly in his prime. Winning for the third year in row, this 1926 Walter Hagen PGA Championship Gold Medal, (est. $80,000+), was presented to Hagen after he defeated two fellow future Hall of Famers – Johnny Farrell and Leo Diegel –  in the semifinals and finals clinching the championship, four and three, to secure the third link in an unbroken chain of four victories in the tournament between 1924 and 1927. It would prove to be the eighth of 11 career major championships.

Items from the Gary Carter Collection also are available during this auction, including the Hall of Famer’s 1982 Gold Glove Award from The Gary Carter Collection,(est. $20,000+). It’s just the second Carter Gold Glove ever offered at auction and quite possibly the last, establishing this as one of the most significant relics on offer not only within The Gary Carter Collection, but also within this auction at large.

In addition to the featured items from the Gary Carter Collection, two other iconic baseball collections are represented. The 1977 New York Yankees World Series Championship Ring Presented to Yogi Berra, (est. $20,000+) is offered by the Berra family and the 1961 Ralph Houk The Sporting News Manager of the Year Certificate, (est. $1,500+) from the Ralph Houk Collection. Houk was the man in charge of the Pinstripes as Mantle and Roger Maris dueled for Ruth’s time-honored Major League single-season home run record as the Yankees beat Cincinnati in five games for another World Series title. When the best Yankee team of them all is bandied about, 1961 is always near the top of the list.
