On April 29th, Historic Auctions will open bidding on one of only two known checks in existence that are directly attributed to the infamous sale of Babe Ruth from the New York Yankees to the Boston Red Sox. While the contract might have symbolically established the details, the transfer of the funds was the substance of the deal which is everything the check embodies. Without the accompanying payment, the contract would have been just another piece of paper. This check is the pinnacle of signed memorabilia and potentially the cornerstone of only the most elite collections in the world.Â
The check is dated February 4th, 1922 and is payable to the “Boston American League Baseball Club.” It is for the amount of $50,000, signed by George Ruppert and countersigned by Huston. It is also endorsed on the reverse by Frazee with a beautiful blue fountain pen and reads “Boston American League Baseball Club by HH Frazee, Prest.†The check has been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA to ensure its authenticity and protect it for years to come. The PSA/DNA label reads “Sale of Babe Ruth to NYY†and also indicates the authenticity of Ruppert and Frazee.
Â
In addition to this exceptional check, Historic Auctions is offering almost 1200 other items up for bidding in its May 2008 auction.Â
