Jackie Robinson, Barry Bonds & Ty Cobb Memorabilia Headlines Goldin Auctions 2019 Spring Auction

The last autograph ever signed by John F. Kennedy, Jackie Robinson’s 1951 Dodgers jersey, Lou Gehrig’s 1925 contract, historic home run baseballs from Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Alex Rodriguez and rare cards of Tom Brady, Mike Trout, Sidney Crosby and more headline the Goldin Auctions 2019 Spring Auction, which is closing on Saturday night, May 11 at GoldinAuctions.com. Included in the 1,200-lot auction are a dozen lots celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jackie Robinson with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

Lot #1 – 1951 Jackie Robinson Historically Significant 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers Home Jersey (MEARS 8) – Despite falling to the Giants in the “Shot Heard Round the World” game, 1951 was one of Robinson’s best, as his .338 average was the second-highest of his career. Last year a historically significant Robinson jersey, from the 1947, season sold for $2.6 million. Goldin Auctions will donate a portion of the winning bid to The Jackie Robinson Foundation (CURRENT BID: $280,000)

Lot #102 – 1953 Jackie Robinson Game Used Hillerich & Bradsby R17 Model Bat (PSA/DNA GU 8)- Fresh to the hobby Goldin Auctions will donate 10% of the winning bid price to The Jackie Robinson Foundation. (CURRENT BID: $36,000)

Lot #61 — Ball Hit by Barry Bonds for his Last Career Home Run #762 – Initially sold by the fan who caught the ball for $376,612 in 2008 — before Bonds officially retired, it comes with impeccable provenance including three affidavits and video of Sutton catching the historic homer. Additionally, Bonds has agreed to sign and inscribe the ball “HR 762 ball hit on 7/2/07” in front of a third-party authenticator later this month. (CURRENT BID: $180,000)

Lot #2 – 1910 E98 “Set of 30” Ty Cobb, Red – PSA GEM MT 10 “1 of 2” – This is one of just two examples at its tier among a total of 14 copies recorded in PSA’s census reporting. This exceptionally rare card depicts the legendary hitter in a tinted black-and-white photograph set against a blazing red background. (CURRENT BID: $170,000)

Lot #5 – Historic 1925 Lou Gehrig Signed Yankees Player’s Contract for his First Full Season –This is the very document that tied Gehrig to the Yankees for the 1925 season for a salary of just $3,750. The 4-page 8 ½ x 11-inch contract signed on March 7, 1925 includes signatures of A.L. President Ed Barrow, Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert and Gehrig in black steel-tipped fountain pen. Gehrig’s 1924 “rookie” contract sold for $480,000 in 2017. (CURRENT BID: $110,000)

Lot #7 – 1959 Ted Williams Game Used Boston Red Sox Complete Home Uniform (ULTRA RARE) – Jersey & Pants with Undershirt (MEARS A10) – Goldin Auctions previously sold a 1959 Ted Williams (MEARS A10) road jersey for $144,000. (CURRENT BID: $57,000)

Lot #3 – 2003/04 Upper Deck Basketball “Exquisite Collection” Unopened Hobby Case – BBCE Certified – This unopened, factory-sealed case contains three boxes (1 pack per box, 5 cards per pack) of the super-premium product. Each box holds one autographed patch card (numbered to 100 or fewer), one autographed rookie patch card (numbered to 225 or fewer), and three additional or base cards (numbered to 225 or fewer). The product contains rookie cards of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh. (CURRENT BID: $56,000)

Lot #51 – 2014 Bowman Chrome Prospect Autos #BCAPMB Mookie Betts Superfractors Signed Rookie Card (#1/1) – BGS MINT 9/BGS 10 – Encapsulated and graded MINT 9 by BGS, with signature graded “10” by Beckett. This is a super-premium Rookie Card, and clearly one of the single most significant Betts rookies in the hobby. The wholly unique, limited-edition piece is serial-numbered “1/1” that stands among the most sought-after modern baseball rookie cards that will be auctioned in 2019. (CURRENT BID: $36,000)

Lot #46 – 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft Prospects #BDPP89 Mike Trout (Blue Refractor) Signed Rookie Card (65/150) – PSA GEM MT 10/Auto 10 – Among twenty-two copies recorded in PSA’s census reporting, just two examples have achieved this specimen’s top-level tier (CURRENT BID: $33,000)

Lot #42 – 2000 Donruss Elite Status #183 Tom Brady Rookie Card (#5/10) PSA GEM MT 10 “1 of 1” – It is the only example of this rookie card at its tier. The exclusive, limited-edition piece is serial-numbered “5/10.” (CURRENT BID: $27,000)

Lot #45 – 2005/06 Upper Deck “The Cup” #180 Sidney Crosby Game Used Patch Signed Rookie Card (#26/99) BGS GEM MINT 9.5/BGS 10 (CURRENT BID: $26,000)

Lot #66 – Alex Rodriguez 500th Career Home Run Bat – This Louisville Slugger C271L model bat displays outstanding game use and is un-cracked. There are ball marks, bat rack streaks and cleat imprints present on the barrel. Handwritten on the knob in silver is “318 *”. A-Rod signed the historic bat in silver marker across the barrel and added the inscriptions “Bat used to hit 500th Career HR” and “8/4/2007”. (CURRENT BID: $27,000)

Lot #62 – Alex Rodriguez 500th Career Home Run Baseball – The home run ball, his on August 4, 2007 was caught by Walter Kowalczyk, who sold it at auction in 2010 for $103,579. The historic ball is covertly marked with the assignation “A 107″. This was pre-marked by MLB in anticipation of A-Rod joining the 500 HR Club. A-Rod signed the panel south of the sweet spot in black pen, inscribing” 500th HR Ball hit 8/4/2007″ below his crisp signature. Accompanied by an MLB Authenticated hologram and a photograph of Rodriguez signing the baseball. (CURRENT BID: $20,000)

Lot #129 – Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier Fight of the Century Contract — This light-blue single-page multi-signed is Ali’s copy from the historic fight at Madison Square Garden in 1971 paying him $2.5 million. This is one of the nicest Ali signatures with his later career and post career signatures display the effects of the onset of Parkinson’s Disease. This contract compares favorably to the 1978 Ali/Leon Spinks contract that sold for $35,850 in 2015. Comes with a LOA from JSA for the signatures. (CURRENT BID: $7,000)

Lot #24 – The Last Autograph of President John F. Kennedy – Video Matched – After arriving at Carswell Air Force to board Air Force One to Dallas on November 22, 1963, the President and First Lady shook hands with servicemen on the tarmac. Then just before they boarded the plane, he autographs a spiral notebook. Provenance for this piece is a National Geographic DVD on the Kennedy Assassination “JFK The Final Hours” in which the president can be seen on the flight line at Carswell Air Force Base signing this piece of American history.
