This week we address some more information on the 1927 New York Yankees and also offer some new autographs.
First, thank you to all those who emailed us after our last edition to provide us with more information about the 1927 Yankees’ team. Jodi Birkholm and Phil Napalitano both reminded us that Joe Styborski is the other team member (with Don C. Miller) who is pictured in uniform in the official team photo but did not make it into a regular season’s game. According to Phil, Styborski died in 1993 and Phil also notes that (edited): Â
Â
There are a couple other names of interest with the ’27 Yanks. Researching some sports pages from the 27 season I found the following. Along with Miller and Styborski there was a catcher named Pickens whose name appears during in-season exhibition box scores. Also as of April 29th Roy Chesterfield was on the roster but don’t know how long he may have lasted on the bench. Even more interesting was that Hall of Famer Stan Coveleski joined the team on July 12, 1927 ‘for duty as a relief pitcher’ never to appear in a game for them that season (on that day Styborski and Pickens ‘were farmed out’ – presumably to make room on the roster for Coveleski). Based on this I believe that these guys (Miller, Styborski, Pickens, Coveleski and possibly Chesterfield) were actually on the active roster at one point or another during the season even though none of them appeared in a game that season. I have not come across signatures of Pickens or Chesterfield. Neither ever appeared in a major league game.’
Â
Thank you, Phil, for your insights on this team. In closing, additional research reveals that Chesterfield was with the Yankees also during Spring training in 1926. Signatures of Pickens (SIK-I), Chesterfield (SIK-II), and Styborski (SIK-II) are all exceedingly rare. Examples of the latter two are included below.
Â
Lastly, advanced collectors also look for team scouts Johnny Nee (d.?/SIK-II) and Paul Krichell (d.57/SIK-II) who both appear in the expanded spring training team photo.
Â
If anyone can provide us with the following information we would appreciate it and will share it with our readers in an upcoming edition:
Â
–full name of ‘Pickens’
Â
–death years for Chesterfield, Miller, Nee, Pickens, and Woods.
Â
Next week we will examine the 1923 Yankee team (their first world’s championship!).
