While amassing some of the best non-sports sets in the hobby and establishing himself as the definitive graded non-sports card collector, he concurrently assembled a pretty amazing sports card collection. His T206 set started like many of his sets. He purchased a really nice T206 set and then commenced to upgrading! And upgrade he did. The best part is that his focus was on the key cards. While the overall set averages EX-MT with a 6.1 GPA, it presents visually at a much higher level.
For instance, three of the four Ty Cobb cards are PSA NM 7, while the Green Cobb is a PSA EX-MT+ 6.5 (one of the top five examples in the hobby). All three of the Cy Young entries grade PSA NM 7, as do two of the three Mathewson cards. As a matter of fact, this set started with just seven Hall of Famer cards in PSA NM 7, and now more than half of the 74 Cooperstown-enshrined subjects have achieved this lofty grade!
