Memory Lane Inc. is honored to announce that the affable ballplayer/collector will be on hand at the company’s booth during two days of the National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore. Dmitri will visit with collectors and sign a special calendar featuring some of his best items on Friday, August 6 and Saturday, August 7. But he’s not coming alone. Visitors to booth #109 at the Baltimore Convention Center will be able to view Dmitri’s legendary collection of PSA 10-graded rookie cards that includes some of the greatest names in baseball history. He’s bringing his 50 best rookie cards to show fans and collectors, including gem mint first-year cards of Stan Musial, Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Harmon Killebrew and many others. It’s an eye-popping hoard of razor sharp baseball memories that Dmitri spent years putting together.
When healthy, Dmitri was one of the finest pure hitters in baseball. Dmitri Young’s .292 career batting average will attest to that. He was also one of those players who had a respect for the game and the players who came before him. Like many of us, Young manifested that appreciation by collecting sports cards and memorabilia.
A former first round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1991, Young retired from the game following the 2009 season. During the latter half of his career, he built an amazing collection of rookie cards graded by PSA and denoting his name on the flip because of the significance of his collection.
It’s refreshing to see a modern era big leaguer who not only embraces the game’s history but appreciates it enough to participate in what many consider a “fan’s hobby”. Having battled injuries and diabetes for much of his career, Dmitri Young came to appreciate every moment he was able to play in the big leagues and that enthusiasm has carried over into his personal life where he has devoted hours to seeking out and enjoying the same things treasured by those who sat in the stands and watched him play.
Young also has a vested interest in the Memory Lane Summer Treasures Auction. He’s decided to part with one element of his collection—a complete ‘set’ of baseballs signed by each and every member of the 500-home run club. The 25 baseballs have been signed by the players who have reached the coveted milestone. Some were his contemporaries as a player, but others he has had to seek out like the ball signed by Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Willie Mays and Reggie Jackson. It’s a unique collection that will be offered as one lot in the MLI auction, slated to close Saturday, August 14.
As usual, Memory Lane will have a major presence at the National, showing off some of the incredible pieces in their Summer Treasures Auction, like the PSA 8.5 Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps card, the ’52 Topps unopened pack and vintage game-worn jerseys from Carl Hubbell and Charlie Gehringer. Free auction catalogs will be available. Also, anyone with items to consign to the company’s Winter Auction can do so at the show.
