PWCC Marketplace Premier Auction Ends June 16, 2022

PWCC’s June Premier Auction is live and featuring more than 300 elite assets across baseball, basketball, football, hockey, golf, soccer, boxing, tennis, racing, Pokemon, and more.   Bidding will conclude on June 16, 2022 at 7PM PT, with extended bidding starting immediately after.  To apply to bid go to:  https://pwccmarketplace.com/premier-auction

The auction’s top lots include the first public auction of one of Luka Doncic’s National Treasures Emerald rookie patch auto cards, an autographed Babe Ruth card, a Lionel Messi rookie, a 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson in a PSA 8 that earned a PWCC-E designation, an O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky rookie at a PSA 9 with PWCC-E and MBA Silver stickers, the highest graded 2018 Bowman Shoehi Ohtani Red Refractor auto card, and more.

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth with Autograph

Ruth’s 1933 Goudey cards are extremely popular but it is rare that an example surfaces with a signature on it, let alone a PSA/DNA 9 as featured in the PWCC Premier Auction. The darkness of the ink in this auto is something that we do not see in most Ruth signatures. They are usually faded or in light ink, especially on baseballs. This signature is so dark and rich that you might feel Ruth’s presence if you look closely. Although the back of this card has an ink stain, the front of it has tremendous eye appeal—a relatively clean surface, good centering, and preserved color.

How rare is Ruth’s signature on a ‘33 Goudey? Ruth has four different Goudey cards: full body, side pose, red background, and half body bat on shoulder. PSA has encapsulated 6 signed examples of card #53, 7 of #144, 4 of #149, and 8 of #181 (this issue). So, only 25 signed PSA examples exist. This card is a 1/25 ‘33 Goudey Ruth PSA/DNA Auto.

2018-19 National Treasures Emerald #127 Luka Doncic RPA

A 2018 National Treasures Emerald Luka Doncic Rookie Patch Auto card numbered /5 is headed to the PWCC June Premier Auction and – according to public data – this marks the public auction debut of the Emerald variation of the card. Data shows the last time an Emerald copy traded hands was in a private sale involving hobby influencer shyne150 in August 2021. The price tag then? $1,000,000.

Variations of this card numbered to 99 copies routinely crest into the six figures. As of this writing, the record for a /99 version of the card was set at PWCC’s Premier Auction in December 2021 when it sold for $780,000.

Doncic’s 2021-22 season ended with a loss in the Western Conference Finals. His lifetime playoff stat line now stands with averages of 32.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, 7.9 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.

“He’s 23 years old and he just scored 40 points in a playoff game for the seventh time,” said Jesse Craig, Director of Business Development at PWCC. “The stats are all there. He appears to be improving every year. The question now is if he can win a ring. If he leads Dallas to a championship – or to multiple championships – the demand for his assets is likely to keep going up. To find this card, in this low of quantity, right now is an incredible opportunity.”

2004 Panini Sports Mega Cracks Lionel Messi Rookie #71 PSA 10

How popular is Messi? For perspective, Shohei Ohtani has 1.4 million Instagram followers. Tiger Woods has 2.9 million, Tom Brady has 12.1 million, and Lewis Hamilton boasts 28 million. Lionel Messi has 327 million IG followers.

Those numbers do not, however, match with Messi’s soccer card pop counts.

In 2004, fans were not collecting soccer cards the way they do now, so manufacturers kept print runs low. How low? PSA has encapsulated 20 copies in a PSA 10 holder since 2004. Again, for perspective, there are 318 ‘86 Fleer Jordan PSA 10s.

This is Messi’s most popular card—perhaps even the sport’s most popular. It is his rookie. It is extremely scarce. Soccer has exploded in popularity. This card has all the ingredients needed to be an intriguing lot.

1952 Topps Jackie Robinson #312 PSA 8 PWCC-E Eye Appeal

During the pandemic, the trading card industry weighed Jackie Robinson’s impact on American history, present-day culture, and the game of baseball. After comparing the value of his cards to other players’, collectors decided in droves that his card values did not correctly reflect his contributions. The result has been one of the most dramatic upward moves in a players’ cards in trading card history.

It is not just that Jackie Robinson broke the color line. It is that he did it with dignity, endured threats against his life, and still managed to play baseball better than most players in the league. Jackie taught us lessons that have endured through generations: how to take the high road, the power of determination, and the impact of grace under fire, to name a few. Fans scorned him then; we admire him now—and such will be the case in perpetuity.

This PSA 8 example is breathtaking, rightfully earning a PWCC-E (Excellent-Top 15%) eye appeal designation. The colors are stunning, the corners are fierce, and the centering is leaps and bounds above the field.

2018 Bowman Chrome Red Refractor Shohei Ohtani Rookie Auto /5 PSA 9

Offered is one of Shohei’s most important Bowman autographed rookie cards—the 2018 Bowman Chrome Red Refractor #SO which has been encased in a PSA/DNA 10 PSA 9 MINT holder. Before discussing this card’s rarity it is important to address a fact about this card for completeness: this card was re-made by Topps and signed by Shohei Ohtani himself. The original was damaged when pulled.

This parallel is limited to only five manufactured with the offered 3/5 serial stamped example representing the highest PSA graded example in existence. Only Ohtani’s Superfractor surpasses it in terms of rarity.

Other Highlights Include:

  • For Jayson Tatum, they are offering a 2017 National Treasures Jayson Tatum Rookie Patch Auto /99 #103 BGS 9.5 GEM MINT that could be found here (with a current bid of $32,000) and 2017 Panini Flawless Prime Green Rookie Patch Auto /5 #28 BGS 9.5 that could be found here (with a current bid of $19,000).
