REA Spring Auction Blends Strong Results Across a Variety of Vintage & Modern

REA’s Spring Catalog Auction closed on Sunday night and the top seller was a 1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron Rookie PSA 9 that sold for $420,000. It was followed by a beautiful 1969-1970 Topps Basketball high-grade complete set ranked #4 on the PSA Set Registry with an 8.77 GPA that sold for an impressive $336,000. A 1993 Upper Deck SP Foil #279 Derek Jeter Rookie PSA GEM MINT 10, one of only 21 examples to be graded this high by PSA, sold for $312,000 and the first and only known example of a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background PSA GOOD+ 2.5 with a Broad Leaf 350 back sold for $270,000.

Perhaps the most unique item in the auction was a pair of Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls signed game-worn Nike Air Ship sneakers worn during his historic 1984 rookie season that sold for $282,000.

The auction generated over $15.4 million in sales and included 16 items that exceeded the $100,000 mark, with more than 91,200 bids being placed by a record number of bidders.

In addition to the 1969-1970 Topps Basketball complete set, REA’s Spring Auction was loaded with numerous other high-grade complete sets, substantiating a reinvigorated focus and enthusiasm on hobby-wide set-building. A 1969 Topps high-grade complete set ranked #6 on the PSA Set Registry boasting an 8.98 GPA sold for $216,000 while a 1962 Topps PSA-graded complete set that includes 32 variations sold for $108,000 and a high-grade 1956 Topps complete set that included an SGC NM/MT 8 Mickey Mantle sold for $75,000.

Some of the other notable top-sellers in REA’s Spring Catalog Auction included:

“What I loved about this event, aside from all of the tremendous results, was the amplified engagement and traction across so many different areas of the hobby. From vintage to modern cards to game-used memorabilia, original photography and unopened boxes, our Spring Auction was a microcosm of the overall health of our industry,” says REA President Brian Dwyer.

REA’s next event will be its May Encore Auction that runs from May 9-19. You can register to bid, review REA’s upcoming auction schedule, and read about different consignor stories from previous and upcoming REA auctions on the company’s website.
