SCP Auctions is going back-to-back with Wagner cards, as another Holy Grail of the hobby will appear in our 2022 Winter Premier Auction. A month after selling a 1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal Honus Wagner graded PSA Authentic restored for over $1.1 million in our 2021 Fall Premier Auction, SCP has hauled in a PSA Authentic Wagner for our next sale.
This PSA Authentic example of the Wagner will be one of many featured items in SCP’s upcoming 2022 Winter Premier Auction, slated to take place early next year. The Wagner is often referred to as the Mona Lisa of the hobby. Though slightly more than 50% of the card remains, in our opinion it is still more valuable than 90% of sports cards in existence.
The card carries the PSA certification number 00000002. The example is slabbed in its original PSA flip, which states it is “PSA Genuine.” It recently resurfaced after dwelling in the consignor’s collection since the 1990s. The unreserved bidding on this unprecedented example will begin at $25,000. With the card market on fire right now, the sale of this unique card is sure to capture the attention of the hobby.
The widely accepted legend for the scarcity of the card is that Wagner did not want his likeness associated with the marketing of tobacco products. Though Wagner was a known tobacco user, many believe he did not want to encourage kids to do the same. The other theory is that Wagner and the American Tobacco Company could not agree on a dollar amount he deemed worthy for the use of his image on their products.
Regardless of the cause of Wagner’s stance, it has effectively increased the mystique surrounding this piece of baseball history even further. With many of these precious cards retreating into private collections for good, even an authentic Wagner up for auction is notable for the collecting world.
