During his professional boxing career, Rocky Marciano wore many boxing gloves while compiling a 37-0 record in the ring and sparring hundreds of rounds in the gym. But, according to sports memorabilia impresario Ken Goldin, his company, Goldin Auctions will sell the only known pair of Rocky Marciano autographed sparring gloves in the Goldin Auctions Fall 2012 Premier Auction beginning on Oct. 10 at www.GoldinAuctions.com.
In 1969, the year of his death, Marciano gave these gloves to a long time friend so that his children could “fight” with each other. Rocky signed the gloves to his friend so that everyone would know that they were really his sparring gloves from 1951 that he used to get ready for this Championship fight with Jersey Joe Walcott in 1952. The date 10/51 is written inside of the right glove in vintage blue ballpoint. Both Everlast boxing gloves are signed on the thumb “To Mario, Your Pal, Rocky ’69”. Included with the lot is a copy of an Letter of Authenticity signed by the man to whom the gloves were personally given by Marciano. The letter details his relationship with Rocky and the provenance of the gloves. There is a copy of a picture of the former owner with Marciano along with a copy of a newspaper article mentioning both people by name. It should be known, gloves that can be put directly onto the hands of Rocky Marciano are extremely rare, and finding a pair that is autographed, is unheard of. PSA/DNA LOA for the signatures.
“We are thrilled to have unearthed this rare piece of boxing history,” said Mr. Goldin. “We can’t wait to see which avid boxing memorabilia collector gets to add this special item to their collection.”
Goldin Auctions will also be offering the following lots from some of boxings’ greatest champions.
