Sandy Koufax’s First Glove Used in L.A. Draws Record Bid at The Memorabilia Network Auction

A 1958 double-signed and game-used Sandy Koufax glove, the first mitt utilized by the Hall of Fame pitcher in Los Angeles, fetched a record $180,000 as bidding concluded Wednesday night on Harlan Werner and his company The Memorabilia Network’s “Greats of the Game” auction. The amount represents the highest ever paid at auction for a Koufax glove.

Also setting a new mark was a 1955 Koufax signed and inscribed major league debut ticket that sold for $45,000, the most ever paid for a stub from the brilliant left-hander’s first game with the Brooklyn Dodgers prior to their move to the City of Angels.

Joining the successful sale of legendary Dodger southpaws, a Clayton Kershaw game worn and signed jersey from his 99th career win nabbed $18,000. During the April 17, 2015, game against the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium, the future Hall of Famer fanned 12 and allowed just one earned run over six innings while recording his first win of the season.

Headlining the 16-day auction, which closed at 7 p.m. PDT on June 14, Koufax’s Herb Score-model and PSA authenticated glove represents just the seventh game-used Koufax mitt sold. Five previous ones have come to the marketplace, while a sixth sold to a private buyer.

Additionally, the June 24, 1955, stub marks the highest PSA-graded ticket from Koufax’s debut, and the only one both graded and autographed. During the historic game against the Milwaukee Braves, the Brooklyn-born rookie commenced one of baseball’s greatest careers by tossing two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, recording his first of 2,936 career strikeouts, and facing future home run king Hank Aaron for the initial time.

“I am honored to have coordinated the sale of the recently discovered Sandy Koufax glove, as well as the countless other spectacular items from many of sports’ larger-than-life figures,” Werner said.

Werner spent more than 30 years representing some of the most well-known legends, including Ali, Koufax, Jim Brown, Joe Namath, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kershaw, Fernando Valenzuela, John Riggins, and the estate of Howard Bingham. The Canoga Park, Calif., native created The Memorabilia Network as a place for people to share their unique stories, much like his intention to wax poetic with his stories about the working relationships and friendship developed during his three decades as a memorabilia agent.

In addition to taking part in illustrious auctions, collectors are welcome to visit Werner’s The Memorabilia Network store located at 14006 Riverside Dr. in Sherman Oaks, Calif., where they have the unique opportunity to purchase rare and authentic sports memorabilia, and displayed artwork.  Additionally, the San Fernando Valley business features never-before-seen photographs of the legendary Howard Bingham, Hollywood memorabilia, vintage cards, signed cars, tickets and unique items.
