SCP Auctions is proud to present one of the most significant basketball uniforms in existence in a single-lot “spotlight” auction open now. The jersey and trunks Wilt Chamberlain wore throughout the home games of his 1959-60 rookie season is open for bidding through June 17, 2023 at www.scpauctions.com. Bid, view and register for the auction at www.SCPauctions.com.
The full uniform was worn by Wilt the Stilt throughout his magnificent rookie campaign with the Philadelphia Warriors. He wore it for home regular season and playoff games he played his rookie year. The uniform was sourced directly from Chamberlain in the mid-1970s. The jersey has been photomatched and authenticated by MeiGray, Sports Investors Authentication, and is also a MEARS A9. Among the matching photographs is a timely color image snapped by Neil Leifer on January 5, 1960, at Madison Square Garden (neutral venue) showing young Wilt exiting the court after scoring 52 points in a victory over the Minneapolis Lakers.
Chamberlain began his NBA career with the most dominant debut season ever, arguably in any sport. The 7’ 1” center won his first of four NBA MVP awards as a rookie, averaging an unprecedented 37.6 points and 27 rebounds per game, setting a total of eight NBA rookie records along the way: https://youtu.be/91GPxjfDIko. Last year the NBA named the Rookie of the Year award the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy, in honor of the historic start to his career.
Game worn jerseys from other NBA legends have fetched eye-popping numbers over the past 12 months. A jersey worn by Michael Jordan in Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals sold for a record $10.1 million in September 2022. In February, a jersey from Kobe Bryant’s lone MVP season in 2007-08 brought over $5.8 million at auction. A Jordan 1992 Olympic Dream Team jersey went for over $3 million in May. SCP’s experts expect this monumental Wilt uniform to set a new record as the highest-selling vintage game-worn basketball piece in history.
