T-3, Sporting Life Card Sets, Ruth Signed Baseballs Highlight Mile High Winter Auction

Mile High Card Company is kicking off 2013 with its Winter Premium Auction, a decidedly smaller and more exclusive event than the company’s traditional auctions, featuring hundreds of lots including some of the best early 20th century sets and singles known to the hobby.

Mile High’s catalog sales have averaged anywhere from $2 to $3 million in sales based on 1200 to 1500 lots over the past 15 years.  This time, the focus is on ultra-rare, iconic  vintage cards and high quality memorabilia.   However, there are other lots targeted at the average collector too.

T-3 Turkey Red baseball cards“As a firm, we really are pleased with the material that is being presented within this catalog and I feel that some of the items offered are amongst the highest caliber of items recently offered within the hobby,” said Mile High Card Company President Brian Drent.

Headlining the baseball card offerings is the third best 1911 T3 Turkey Red Complete Set on PSA’s Set Registry.   Averaging EX (5), the historic offering will be sold as either a complete set or as singles with the higher aggregate price determining the method of sale.

1911 T205 baseball setThe third current finest 1911 T205 Gold Border Complete Set is also being offered.  Carrying a remarkable GPA of 5.869, this set will also employ the same method of sale by being offered as both a complete set as well as singles with the contents being sold to the higher aggregate bids.

A third offering utilizing this same process of sale is a 1911 M116 Sporting Life Master Set that ranks as the #2 All-Time Finest on the PSA Set Registry with GPA of 6.387.

Pasteboards offered as single lots within the sale of note include a several high grade cards of baseball icons from the pre-World War II War era.  Collectors will find a very desirable 1909 T204 Ramly Eddie Collins PSA 8 NM/MT, as well as a imagination conjuring 1910 E98 Red Cy Young PSA 8; NM/MT from the recent Black Swamp Find;  a 1933 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth that has been graded SGC 88 NM/MT 8.

Mickey Mantle 1956 Topps PSA 9The post-War listings include one of the finest known 1956 Topps #135 Mickey Mantle cards.  Featuring minty white borders and sharp corners, the card represents Triple Crown season and is a favorite of collectors who will find it has been graded PSA 9 MINT.

The memorabilia portion of the January Premium auction includes an item already attracting attention from serious collectors, baseball historians—and those who collect gangster memorabilia:  a Babe Ruth and Al Capone Signed OAL (Harridge) ball that to the best knowledge of the auction house is the only example extant. The ball is consigned to MHCC from the families of Hall Of Famer Eddie Collins and Hall Of Famer Herb Pennock who originally obtained the amazing sphere. Eddie Collins’ son Eddie Collins Jr., who also played in the Major Leagues for three seasons, married the daughter of Herb Pennock who had gotten the ball signed by the feared gangster and then asked his famed teammate Babe Ruth to sign the ball.

Autographed Al Capone ballThe Ruth-Capone ball has been a prized heirloom of the family and is being offered publicly for the very first time. The ball is supported by significant provenance that includes the following: A hand written account of the ball from Eddie Collins’ grandson Pete Collins in which he relates an account of Miller Huggins reprimanding Yankee players for interacting with such an unsavorable character such as Capone before a game.

The ball is supported by LOA’s from JSA as well as John Reznikoff.

Autographed 1927 Yankees team reunion baseballAlso of note on the memorabilia side is a high grade1927 Babe Ruth Single-Signed Ball with letters from PSA/DNA AND JSA, as well an impressive 1927 New York Yankees reunion signed ball with 11 signatures including Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Pennock, Bengough and others.  Presented with LOA from PSA/DNA and JSA, it came from the Pennock family along with the Ruth/Capone ball thatis being offered.  The sale includes an exceptionally scarce 1967 Boston Red Sox American League Championship Ring that is being offered for the first time.

More than 800 lots are included in the auction, which according to Mile High, includes “ literally something for everyone, from the pre-war enthusiasts to post-war collectors, from the high-grade aficionados to collector- grade type hobbyists”.

All catalogs have been shipped for this auction and bidding will culminate January 31. Mile High Card Company is currently accepting consignments for their Spring auction (as well as all 2013 auctions) with a consignment deadline of March 24.
