During the 1990’s there were more than 2,500 regular season NFL games played, but none were more hyped than the September 11, 1994 showdown between Joe Montana’s Kansas City Chiefs and Steve Young’s San Francisco 49ers. Dubbed, the “Vindication Bowl” by Sports Illustrated, the game marked Montana’s only career start against the 49ers and the future Hall of Famer who would fill his shoes. Jerseys worn by both Montana and Young from that very game are being reunited in the Goldin Auctions April 5, 2013 Auction, which runs from February 25th – April 5th. The Montana jersey is certainly the highlight among the items being offered as part of The Joe Montana Collection. For more information, visitwww.goldinauctions.com.
For the record, the Chiefs defeated the 49ers 24-17 behind 203 yards passing and a pair of touchdown passes from Montana. The 49ers would go on to win the Super Bowl that season with Young earning MVP honors. Bidding for the Montana jersey begins at $5000 while bidding for the Young jersey begins at $2500.
Montana signed both sides of the #19 Chiefs home jersey with different inscriptions. The front, signed on the “9” is his signature and the inscription 1994 GAME JERSEY 9-11-94 KC 24 – SF 17″. On the back, his name is inscribed on the “1” and on the “9” he has written “MY GAME WORN JERSEY, 9-11-94 KC 24 SF 17, 19-31 PASSING 203 YDS 2 TDS. The jersey comes with a signed letter of authenticity from Montana and is Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Young’s 49ers road jersey from the game is signed by him on the front number “8” in black marker with the added notation “MVP ’94”. It includes a LOA from the 49ers and is certified PSA/DNA MEARS-10.
“The fact that Montana saved this jersey for more nearly 20 years shows just how important the game was for him. It’s certainly the most important game he ever played for the Chiefs and one of the 10 most memorable games in his career,” said Ken Goldin, Founder of Goldin Auctions. “The chance for a collector to own the two jerseys worn by these two Hall of Fame quarterbacks in their only ever head-to-head match-up is a spectacular offering and a must-have for any 49er, Joe Montana, Steve Young or football Hall of Fame collector or football historian. This jersey pairing is easily worthy of being on display in Canton”
To complement the aforementioned jersey, the Montana collection also consists of eight additional game worn items from his tenure with Kansas City in 1993-94. These lots include: ’93 Montana Chiefs game worn pants; ’93 Montana game worn and signed black flak jacket; ’93-94 Montana game worn and signed game socks; ’93-94 Montana practice worn and signed Chiefs jersey; ’94Montana game worn and signed under-garment; ’93-94 Montana signed game issued cleats; Montana game worn and signed knee brace; and Montana game worn and signed white flak jacket.
