Right alongside the 1952 Topps set, T206 represents what can be described as a foundational set in our hobby. As the 20th century ushered in the popular Dead Ball Era of baseball, characters the likes of Cobb and Wagner owned the base-paths while Johnson, Mathewson and Young dominated the mound. It was no surprise that the American Tobacco Company solicited the help of sportswriters to get “the boys” to allow their images to be used as inserts in cigarette packs.
Adding to the mystique, Honus Wagner — one of the game’s biggest draws — would not allow his image to be used, resulting in his card becoming the most valuable baseball card in the world!
Marty Quinn is known by many as a Hall of Fame collector of PSA non-sports cards. While amassing some of the best non-sports sets in the hobby and establishing himself as the definitive graded non-sports card collector, he concurrently assembled a pretty amazing sports card collection. His T206 set started like many of his sets. He purchased a really nice T206 set and then commenced to upgrading! And upgrade he did. The best part is that his focus was on the key cards. While the overall set averages EX-MT with a 6.1 GPA, it presents visually at a much higher level. For instance, three of the four Ty Cobb cards are PSA NM 7, while the Green Cobb is a PSA EX-MT+ 6.5 (one of the top five examples in the hobby). All three of the Cy Young entries grade PSA NM 7, as do two of the three Mathewson cards. As a matter of fact, this set started with just seven Hall of Famer cards in PSA NM 7, and now more than half of the 74 Cooperstown-enshrined subjects have achieved this lofty grade! It was said about the original set that it was “not put together indiscriminately…it was very carefully assembled card-by-card, with an eye for quality and value.” We couldn’t agree more. Now, mix in close to 100 upgrades and what results a high-grade, beautifully matched and aesthetically pleasing set. We are honored that Marty chose Legendary Auctions to sell his set, and we are hopeful that the presentation you hold in your hands will do it justice.
We are confident that collectors will appreciate this presentation of what is undoubtedly one of the finest T206 sets ever assembled. Even if you don’t buy a single card, keep this catalog: it contains a splendid depiction of each and every card, and it’s an ideal and enduring reference tool for what I believe to be the greatest set in the hobby!
Bidding will begin November 7th at legendaryauctions.com on The T206 Set Break and over 2,300 other offerings of the finest sports collectibles the industry has to offer.
