Memory Lane’s Winter Rarities Jan. 13, 2024 Auction closed with some amazing prices realized. Check out some of the top prices realized from the auction:

Top Results from the January 13, 2024 Auction include:

One of only two known examples of a rookie era Babe Ruth postcard, featuring an image of the young Bambino at spring training, sold for $160,736 to top the Winter Rarities Auction. The image, taken at the Red Sox spring camp in Hot Springs, Arkansas, is considered a real photo postcard, having been developed on period photo paper directly from the original glass negative. The unique photo isn’t seen on any other Ruth card. Bidding had opened at $50,000.

Several rare Ruth items were the focal point of the auction. A 1920 card handed out to promote his 1920 movie, Headin’ Home, sold for $84,998.  Graded 2 by PSA, it is among the first cards to feature Ruth as a Yankee and one of only three copies ever encapsulated by PSA.

A recently discovered barnstorming tour advertising card featuring Ruth and graded PSA 1.5, realized $61,909.  The card shows Ruth completing a swing as he moves toward first base, stands as one of only three copies encapsulated by grading companies.

An ultra-rare 1924 Knight Motors Inc. Detroit Tigers pocket schedule featuring Ruth and Ty Cobb graded PSA 1 soared to $31,986, while a 1928 R315 Ruth graded 3.5 realized $16,538.

A high grade set of 1911 T3 Turkey Red cabinet cards was broken up and sold with a PSA 6 Ty Cobb netting $105,306.  Only two examples have ever been graded at a higher level.  A record setting PSA 6 Christy Mathewson (checklist back) sold for a staggering $86,947. Some other imposing record sales from this exceptionally attractive set included a Mordecai Brown PSA 6 ($50,431), Nap Lajoie PSA 5.5 ($46,062), Cy Young PSA 6 ($42,854); Eddie Collins PSA 5 ($25,331; Harry McIntyre PSA 5 ($31,555), Harry Krause PSA 6 ($20,432), and Walter Johnson PSA 5 ($20,048).

A 1915 Cracker Jack Grover Cleveland Alexander graded PSA 8 (pop 16) set a new record for the grade when it sold for $55,498. Other cards from the set that crossed the block included PSA 8 copies of Nap Lajoie ($38,006) and Tris Speaker ($24,214).

The auction included plenty of other pre-War cards and rare issues. A scarce 1923-24 Billiken Oscar Charleston graded PSA 2 was chased down after bidding hit nearly $50,000 while a 1910 E90-2 American Caramel Co. Honus Wagner graded a 2 hit $43,998.

Cards from the 1932 US Caramel set included a trio of five-figure PSA 8 sales including Rogers Hornsby ($43,930), Lefty Grove ($33,193) and Jimmie Foxx ($17,543).

A pair of Foxx cards from the 1933 Goudey set had bidders chasing the high-grade examples until the end. Each of the PSA 8 copies sold for more than $39,000.   Meanwhile a 1934 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig graded 7 headed to a new home for $29,724.

What’s a Memory Lane auction without T206 cards?  A Johnny Evers with Bat graded PSA 8, was among the highlights at $24,427, while a Tolstoi Walter Johnson Hands at Chest graded a 6.5 reached $15,035.

Mickey Mantle cards factored heavily into the sale with a PSA 4 copy of his ever-popular 1952 Topps issue selling for $106,669.  A group of signed vintage Mantle cards sold as well, with 1953 Bowman, 1954 Bowman and 1961 Topps cards, all bearing high quality Mantle autographs, sold for $18,226 each.

A high-grade 1953 Topps set was also parsed out.  Among the notable sales were a PSA 9 copy of card #237, “Bud” Podbielan, that netted $65,605. The card is a pop 2.  A PSA 9 Yogi Berra (none higher) reached $54,707 while a PSA 9 Phil Rizzuto landed at $31,986.

When it comes to high-grade set building, collectors aren’t afraid to spend on low pop single cards that are typically available in ungraded form for a couple of bucks. Case in point: a 1974 Topps #575 Steve Garvey PSA 10 that soared to $33,133 and a 1975 Topps Ken Griffey PSA 10 that rocketed to $22,476.

The ninth best 1952 Bowman Large Football set on PSA’s registry sold as is for $31,986.  Pigskin fans also pounced on a 1948 Leaf Sammy Baugh Maroon Jersey #34 PSA 8 (pop 10). The card set a new record price at $22,054. A 1952 Bowman Large Otto Graham PSA 9 fetched $29,056.

The auction included dozens of vintage unopened packs and boxes, including 1978 and ’79 Topps Baseball vending cases that sold for $29,724 and $33,586, respectively.

Autograph and memorabilia collectors weren’t forgotten. The auction included a dual signed Ruth check that sold for $11,297, a photo postcard of Ruth with a PSA/DNA 8 signature grade ($13,348) and a Ruth signed government postcard from 1939 with a 9 grade that hit $8,488.

One of the more appealing display items offered was a 1950s Mickey Mantle and Stan Musial Wonder Bread Advertising Sign. Measuring 10-5/8″ x 14-5/8″ it netted nearly $13,000.
