One of the rarest examples of the hobby’s most famous baseball card has changed hands for $5.856 million, as a 1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner featuring the exceptionally rare Piedmont advertising back highlighted Heritage Auctions’ 2026 Summer Platinum Night Sports Auction. The SGC Authentic Wagner sold on August 21, 2026, after attracting significant collector interest, including 53 bids and registered phone bidders. The final price includes Heritage’s 22% buyer’s premium.
While virtually any genuine T206 Wagner ranks among the most coveted pieces in sports collecting, this example carries another level of rarity. According to Heritage, it is one of only three known T206 Honus Wagner cards with a Piedmont advertising back. The overwhelming majority of surviving Wagners feature the familiar Sweet Caporal back.
The three known Piedmont examples include the legendary Gretzky/McNall Wagner, one of the most famous individual sports cards ever discovered and the first trading card encapsulated by PSA.
A $25 Card in 1958 Becomes a $5.856 Million Treasure
Adding considerably to the card’s story is documentation dating back nearly seven decades.
Accompanying the Wagner is a letter from pioneering baseball card dealer Charles Bray, along with its original postmarked envelope dated April 17, 1958 and a related flyer. Bray, an important figure in the development of the early baseball card marketplace, corresponded with the card’s owner about purchasing his collection.
At the time, Bray valued the Honus Wagner at just $25 in good, clean and undamaged condition and offered $10 for an Eddie Plank from the same collection. The correspondence provides a fascinating snapshot of an era when vintage baseball cards had only begun to develop a serious collectors’ market. Bray ultimately did not purchase the Wagner.
According to Heritage, the card remained with the original owner’s family until approximately 25 years ago, when the family offered it along with roughly 500 other tobacco cards at auction. The consignor in Heritage’s Platinum Night auction purchased the Wagner at that sale. The 2026 Heritage offering represented only the card’s second auction appearance.
One of Just Three Piedmont Wagners Known
The card has been certified SGC Authentic due to evidence of trimming, but its unusual production history is important.
Heritage noted that the known Piedmont Wagners originated as printer’s scrap rather than traditionally factory-cut cards. The offered example retains the rounded corners and scattered creasing associated with many surviving T206 Wagners, along with a faint image of another subject ghosted across Wagner’s portrait.
Despite the technical Authentic designation, the extreme rarity of the Piedmont back, the card’s provenance and its accompanying 1958 hobby documentation helped propel bidding far beyond Heritage’s pre-auction guide value of $4 million and up.
When bidding was complete, an Internet bidder captured the card for $5,856,000.
The result also significantly surpassed another T206 Wagner sold by Heritage earlier this year. In March 2026, the Garagiola Wagner, a T206 Sweet Caporal example graded SGC Authentic, realized $3.599 million.
T206 Wagner Remains at the Pinnacle of the Hobby
More than a century after its release, the T206 Honus Wagner continues to occupy a unique position in sports collecting.
Wagner’s Hall of Fame career, the card’s legendary scarcity and generations of publicity have made it one of the few collectibles recognizable well beyond the traditional sports memorabilia market. The Piedmont variation takes that scarcity another step further, with only three examples presently known.
The $5.856 million sale once again demonstrates that even as modern cards, game-used memorabilia and one-of-one collectibles increasingly command seven-figure prices, the most important vintage baseball cards remain firmly entrenched among the hobby’s premier assets.
For this particular Wagner, the journey is especially remarkable: valued at $25 in correspondence from 1958 and sold 68 years later for nearly $5.9 million.
